I am still feeling the BIG energy of my recent New York City trip (see tip#615) from over a week ago. Everything about the Big Apple was big! The buildings, the signage, the meals and even the $24 martinis I was treated to all radiated BIG! These experiences mirrored my current mindset of thinking bigger AND on a global level.
My new ebook “Movies for Motivation: How To Stay Strong in Difficult Times” was the catalyst because it is available on every Amazon website in the world like the UK, Japan, France, Spain, India, USA and Canada. It blows my mind every time I think of this! And being in New York City helped inject some energetic testosterone into my spirit which I intend to bring with me into the New Year!
Premium Rush (2012)
The action film, Premium Rush is about a New York City bike messenger Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who picks up an envelope that a dirty cop (Michael Shannon) is after. The energy of this film is a real rush as most of the scenes are zooming through the streets of Manhattan while dodging cars and people from the point of view of the bike messengers.
While the action is engaging you also get a rapid tour of Manhattan. Through Wilee you go through Central Park, Chinatown and many areas inbetween during flash-backs and flash-forwards. There are a lot of movies filmed in New York City and this is just one that captures the kinetic energy I feel from the Big Apple.
Whatever gets you to think BIG and feel BIG energy do it now! As you enter the New Year make big goals and do your very best to stay motivated to achieve them! And if movies motivate you then find films that will inject some energetic testosterone into your spirit! Feel the rush and then take action!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

HOW TO SEE MOVIES AS INSPIRATIONAL LEARNING TOOLS - Over 1,000 Movie Tips For Dealing with Depression & Difficult Times

Tip#616: Trust Your Gut, Part 1 - Jack Reacher
Movies can either entertain and allow you to escape for awhile OR they can be just moving images on a screen reminding you that you are still in a movie theatre. Yesterday was Christmas Day and I wanted to see a film that took me away for awhile and chose Les Miserable. Unfortunately it was sold out so my second choice (though it didn’t feel 100% right) was The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Despite it’s rich fantasy scenery and colourful characters it didn’t absorb me into its magical land. It felt bloated and I was very aware I was still sitting in a movie theatre.
Right after my intuition told me to see Tom Cruise’s new film Jack Reacher. I trusted my gut feeling and was totally surprised that it instantly transported me into its celluloid world!
Jack Reacher (2012)
The crime mystery thriller Jack Reacher is about a captured sniper who just killed five people and makes only one request for someone to contact Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise). Reacher is a drifter and former Military Police officer who begins an investigation of the shootings to reveal that all is not what it seems. The film has thrilling car chases and fight scenes as well as being an engaging mystery.
There was so much to enjoy about this movie that I definitely forgot I was in a movie theatre. First I loved that there were many scenes with no dialogue and only visuals to tell the story. Reacher also demonstrated such confidence and powerful fighting skills when dealing with antagonists. And the story flowed so well. Simply put, I followed my intuition to see a film that wasn’t even on my radar and it charged up my positive emotion energy! I felt so good like I just ate another big, delicious holiday meal (without the bloated part!).
Sometimes ideal choices don’t make sense but FEEL like the right thing to do. That’s when it’s time to let your gut, intuition and even your heart make the decision instead of your head. The right movie at the right time can do wonders to entertain and help you escape your world for awhile. Trust that your inner voice leads you to the right one when you need it most!

Tip#615: Re-energize Yourself with Childlike Happiness - Elf
Being in New York City has always been about soaking up the BIG energy I feel there (see tip#614)! And this is the first time in a long time I experienced the Big Apple at Christmas time. The energy is even more magical and uplifting!
The same friends I stayed with in Brooklyn back in 2007 (see tip#90) took me to Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas trees and decorations. The trees were stunning and I truly felt my inner child come alive with unapologetic glee! The colourful lights and smiling people around me re-activated my silly, playful side and I then remembered this is where the movie Elf was filmed!
Elf (2003)
The comedy Elf is about a human named Buddy (Will Ferrell) who is raised by Christmas elves and goes to New York City to find his real father (James Caan). Because of his upbringing Buddy has kept his playful inner child alive and sees everything in the Big Apple with wonder and joy. That positivity eventually touches everyone around Buddy. This film has many timeless messages for living life to the fullest which is why it is one of the 55 movies featured in my book Movies for Motivation: How To Stay Strong in Your Life & Career. Read the first chapter: click here
"We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup."
Buddy demonstrates that tapping into happy childhood memories can keep you positive and uplifted. There is even a scene where his brother, Michael, receives a Christmas gift and the energy of his excitement suddenly lifts up Santa’s sleigh because it is powered by Christmas spirit. This concept can be applied to your own times of low energy where you can re-energize yourself by remembering and FEELING happy memories from your past.
Do your best to see the world every day through the eyes of a child. See everything with wonder and joy! And when you feel low energy remember favourite things you loved as a child and FEEL that positive energy re-vitalize your spirit. For those who love the holidays you can tap into Christmas Spirit and share it with everyone around you. Sharing will re-energize you too!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Tip#614: A Dream Comes True in New York City - Serendipity
I am finally back in New York City for Christmas vacation and celebrating the completion of my first book Movies for Motivation: How to Stay Strong in Difficult Times! It has been five years since I was last here (see: tip#88) and it is synchronistic with the same five years it took to finish and publish my book. Dreams do come true and it feels so perfect that I am now soaking up the Christmas magic that is in the air here in the Big Apple!
Yesterday I was shooting a video promo for my book at the famous Rockefeller Centre where I witnessed another dream come true for someone else. Under the majestic Christmas tree and that iconic gold statue of Prometheus there are usually ice-skaters enjoying the rink but they suddenly cleared the area. Then a young couple came out skating with a third person video recording them. After a short while the young man then got on his knees, held a little box out to his girl. Everyone watching started to cheer! They embraced and skated once around the rink radiating all this love. That young man's dream just came true and he had the biggest smile on his face!
Serendipity 2001
The romantic comedy Serendipity is about Sara (Kate Beckinsale) and Jonathan (John Cusack) who meet in New York City at Christmas time. They feel a deep love for each other but are with other lovers so they play a game of serendipity and see if fate brings them together again. After many years pass synchronicities begin to magically appear for each of them and although they had plans to marry other partners they trust these unusual signs and find each other again in the Big Apple.
This has always been a favourite movie of mine because it demonstrates the magical coincidences, serendipities and synchronicities I believe we all experience in life. Only when we trust in these signs can we then accelerate towards our dreams and goals. And if it takes a little longer to get there it is only because there is inner work needed to properly receive a dream come true. It took me 5 years to finish my first book and to return to New York City and during that time needed to clear a lot of outer AND inner clutter. Now I believe I am ready for the next big stage of my life! NYC has such a big energy and I know being here is helping me prepare for bigger things to come!
If you have a dream that is taking a long time to come true remember to keep believing in yourself and your dream. Keep following the synchronicities and serendipities that are leading you to your dreams and goals while also helping you prepare your heart and mind to receive what you desire. And when you witness a dream coming true for someone else give them a big cheer! One day others will be cheering for you too!
MORE SYNCHRONICITY!

Tip#613: Keep Hope & Joy Alive During the Holidays - While You Were Sleeping
For some, Christmas time can be a difficult time. In 2000 my father passed away suddenly just before Christmas and I miss him most this time of year. And yet he was the one who instilled a love for movies in me and I do my best to keep that joy alive especially during the holidays.
Movies are extra magical during the holidays. They always fill me with an uplifting energy and they help me feel more enthusiasm and hope. They remind me that everything will be okay whenever I feel down or lonely. And I always get excited when other movie lovers recommend a movie that synchronistically lifts my spirit at exactly the right time I needed it! This is one film I had never seen until someone recommended it recently…
While You Were Sleeping (1995)
The romantic comedy While You Were Sleeping is about Lucy (Sandra Bullock), a lonely transit token collector, who rescues the life of a commuter Peter (Peter Gallagher) she has a secret crush for. While he is in a coma Lucy is then mistaken as his fiancée by his family and relatives and immediately drawn into humorous situations of keeping up the false identity.
What unfolds is a funny, heartwarming story during Christmas of this lonely woman being embraced by a loving family and finding romantic love unexpectedly. It's the type of story that can remind you that challenging situations can lead to positive and exciting opportunities. It's a reminder that synchronistic meetings with strangers can change your life for the better!
If you are feeling lonely or down this holiday remember to keep hope and joy alive with uplifting movies. Watch your favourite films that you know fill you with a warm glow. And be open to recommendations of movies you've heard of but never seen yet. This may be the perfect moment when you discover a new favourite to add to your library of uplifting, re-energizing resources!

Tip#612: Be Open for Magical Alignments – 12:12:12 – 4 Holiday Movie Tips
Today's date is December 12, 2012 or 12:12:12. There is something magical about this set of numbers and it will never happen again in our lifetime. Plus this blog tip is #612 so I feel extra magic about the date! These numeral alignments makes me think of Christmas movies where storylines and characters magically align and intersect. Here are 4 films to inspire magical alignments in your life today and during the holidays…
Love Actually (2003)
This romantic comedy follows the lives of eight very different couples dealing with their love lives as they approach Christmas. The star-studded cast includes Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and Keira Knightley in stories that wonderfully intertwine into a rousing conclusion.
Noel (2004)
This drama is about five strangers in New York City all seeking a miracle on Christmas Eve. Starring Susan Sarandon, Alan Arkin, Penelope Cruz and Robin Williams in stories that somehow align so that the help they wish for arrives in unexpected ways.
The Family Stone (2005)
This comedy drama is about an uptight, conservative, businesswoman who nervously joins her boyfriend’s family for Christmas celebrations. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Dermot Mulroney, Claire Danes and Luke Wilson in a story where strangers are brought together and unexpectedly find true love and acceptance.
The Holiday (2006)
This romantic comedy is about two women who escape heartbreak during the holiday season by temporarily exchanging homes in London and Los Angeles. Starring Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jack Black, they show how the timing of two people’s needs leads to magical connections in new locations.
We all experience magical alignments of meeting people with answers we seek from time to time. We can also be the source of help for strangers we come across when they need it. Be open today and every day to the synchronicities, serendipities and coincidences that all line up to lead you to what you need or dream about. Magical alignments are always in the air as long as you believe it is!

Tip#611: Keep Loving the Movies You Love - Here Comes the Boom
Some box office bombs go on to become hugely popular with the public. For example the classic It's A Wonderful Life was initially considered a box office flop but is now a big part of our cultural DNA and loved by millions! And TIME Magazine just released their Top 10 best and worst movies of 2012. Their worst list included 3 movies that I and others loved: Cloud Atlas, John Carter, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. So despite negative reviews or box-office sales ANY movie can be loved and be a huge source of enjoyment and inspiration.
This is the point I wrote about in Chapter 1 of my new book "Movies for Motivation: How To Stay Strong in Difficult Times". I featured a favourite movie of a successful individual and how it inspired them. I shared Reese Witherspoon's favourite, Outboard starring Goldie Hawn, which she announced to the world at the 84th Academy Awards. It didn't matter if people laughed at her choice, it only mattered that she found great value, comfort and joy from this film!
Read Chapter 1 free on Amazon Kindle. Go to this link and see "Click to LOOK INSIDE": click here
Here Comes the Boom (2012)
The comedy Here Comes the Boom is about a high school biology teacher named Scott Voss (Kevin James) who needs to raise money fast for his school and his friend and music teacher Marty Streb (Henry Winkler). He ends up competing as a mixed-martial arts fighter with humorous results. The film also highlights the joy of music and, as a sideline, the love of food!
I was really surprised when I was drawn into this movie when I felt a lot of good messages about doing what you love, friendship and fighting for a lost cause. This film is a Happy Madison Production which is Adam Sandler's company. Sandler’s productions usually get savaged by reviewers but then become hugely popular with the public. So let this inspire you to love the movies you love despite it being a box-office bomb or unliked by film critics and even your own friends.
Remember that your choices and opinions have value. They matter. When you love something that others hate do your best to stand strong and tall for your thoughts and feelings. If you derive great value, comfort and joy from certain movies then embrace it and know that someone somewhere feels the same way. Keep loving what you love!

Tip#610: Follow Your Dream, Part 1 – Movies for Motivation: How To Stay Strong In Your Life & Career - Limitless
I am thrilled to announce that I have made a big dream come true and have published my first book! "Movies for Motivation: How To Stay Strong in Your Life & Career" is now available on Amazon as a Kindle book. And I am happy that a free Kindle reader is also available for any device so anyone can access it! Look inside book: click here
It has been a five year journey and I first announced my dream in tip#40 in 2007 when I saw author of The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris Gardner, in person and he said these inspiring words, "Don't think about the money, just keep doing you love doing." I took those words to heart and declared my vision to get a book published that can help inspire people through movies!
Movies for Motivation book features:
• 55 movies for passion & perseverance
• Foreword written by Toronto Film Critic and TV host, Richard Crouse
• J.K. Rowling’s inspiring story
And there are many movies about writers that I could feature for this special blog post and yet I wanted one that represented the excitement and energy I felt in the final week of writing and prepping my book for Amazon Kindle. My mind was so focused, sharp and productive that I truly felt like a superhero on a mission! Also I felt a profound surge of energy within me during that week where I somehow found the time to watch 12 movies! All this reminded me of one amazing movie.
Limitless (2011)
The thriller film, Limitless is about a writer, Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) unable to finish a commissioned book and discovers a top-secret drug that activates the full potential of his brainpower. Soon he is able to access knowledge already stored in his brain to solve problems, increase his confidence and self-esteem, clean up his life AND finish writing his book at lightning speed! The visual effects of how Eddie's brain is working are stunning.
I believe movies like this helped me visualize my own potential in making my dream come true of getting my first book published. And I didn't need a top-secret drug to accomplish it. I followed Chris Gardner's inspiration to keep following my passion and I did everything I could to rewire my mindset and transform old ways of thinking that were keeping me stuck. And so on my journey to making a dream come true I ended up learning how to live life to the fullest, improve my mental health AND surround myself with supportive people! My published book is now just the cherry on top!
If you are following your dream or vision and need a big tip to making it come true then see your desire from a higher perspective. This will be a journey for learning how to stay passionate and how to transform your mindset. You will learn to increase your confidence and self-esteem in all areas of your life. And then accomplishing your dream will end up being a fabulous bonus!

Tip#609: Believe in Yourself - ParaNorman
"There's nothing wrong with being scared Norman, as long as you don't let it change who you are."
This has been a very special week and very soon you will know why! Just know that there are dreams I have dreamed about that are coming true and that I can now look back over the years and see that there was always someone who believed and supported me. I feel that they believed in me because I kept believing in my gifts and my vision, even when I faced overwhelming adversities and people who didn't understand.
ParaNorman (2012)
The stop-motion animated comedy horror film ParaNorman is about a misunderstood boy named Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who can see and talk to dead people. He must face ghosts, zombies and grown-ups when he is given the task to save his town from a centuries-old curse. All the colourful characters and rich scenery are amazing to watch and knowing this is stop-motion animation is an astounding achievement. See: movie trailer
What got me to finally see this film recently was reading a review of the "spectacular and touching climax." And without giving away any details that’s all you need to know to see this movie. The journey to those moments ended up being a fun ride getting to know Norman and the challenges he faced for being different. That in itself is a beautiful metaphor for following a dream or goal. Just focus on an exciting end goal, believe in yourself and enjoy all the steps along the way.
Motivating messages include:
• Believe in yourself and your gifts
• Show compassion to others
• Remember there is always someone to support you
If you ever feel misunderstood or different from others always remember that you are never alone. Keep believing in your gifts, talents and the vision of what you want and others will come to your aid and support. Whether you are on a long or short journey to your goals and dreams remember to believe in yourself first!

Tip#608: God in Cinema, Part 1 - Life of Pi
"Even when God seemed to have abandoned me, he was watching. Even when he seemed indifferent to my suffering, he was watching. And when I was beyond all hope of saving, he gave me rest. Then he gave me a sign to continue my journey."
Life of Pi (2012)
One of the greatest gifts my life journey has helped me with was the deeper relationship I have now with God. And hearing the above quote in the movie Life of Pi touched my soul because I have experienced it time and time again. And I feel so grateful that yet another cinematic experience can communicate something so personal to me AND that I can now recommend to others going through difficult times.
Life of Pi (2012)
The fantasy adventure drama Life of Pi is an epic journey of survival and self-discovery for a young man from India, Pi (Suraj Sharma), sharing a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. As shown when he is a boy, Pi was passionately learning about God through many religions. This learning continued through his hardships alone at sea and experiencing many spectacular, magical moments with nature. His relationship with God deepens and enriches his soul to learn how to stay alive AND co-exist with the tiger. See: movie trailer
Right from the beginning when the opening song played I got chills up my spine and knew I was in for a cinematic treat! The rich, colourful sequences and computer-generated imagery were absolutely stunning. And it also uses 3D effects in fantastic ways. I truly felt magic radiating from this movie. All these factors enhanced the powerful motivational messages about life, purpose, perseverance and God.
If and when you are at your absolute lowest in life remember there is always the option of surrendering to a higher power. Always remember that you are never alone. And remember that there is magic in movies that can lift you up when you feel lost. And maybe, just maybe its because a higher power led you to see it!

Tip#607: Movie Message about Purpose - Rise of the Guardians
Purpose: Defined as the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.
How do you feel when you hear Christmas music playing in stores early in mid-November? For me I love it because I always feel a happy surge of joy inside that spreads out to every part of my body. It feels blissful! Over the years I've learned that the purpose of Christmas songs is an uplifting resource that fills me up with a timeless, feel good energy.
I also feel my purpose is to share uplifting resources I've discovered or created with others feeling low, stuck or going through difficult times. For years I've done this consciously through my art, illustrations and music as well as my motivational talks AND this movie blog. I've felt a passion in all these areas which is why I know this is my purpose.
Rise of the Guardians (2012)
The computer-animated fantasy-adventure Rise of the Guardians is about the team up of mythical childhood characters as superheroes to save the children of the world. The characters include Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), the Sandman and Jack Frost (Chris Pine). These imaginatively re-invented personalities battle the Boogeyman (Jude Law) in rich and visually stunning landscapes around the world. See: movie trailer
The film is also rich with messages for young and old centered on Jack Frost. Frost was born with a talent and yet for years has been seeking his purpose. He also wants to be seen and recognized by others. Santa helps him on his search for an answer by asking him, "What is your centre?" This is one of those rare films that can tap into the magic of your childhood memories of Christmas, Easter, etc. and take it to the next level for finding answers to grown-up questions about…
• How to find your purpose
• Importance of being acknowledged, seen and believed in
• How to face fears
Finding purpose in any part of your life is about being more aware and conscious of what energizes you. What moves you? What makes you take action? Recognize the answers and then embrace it with all your heart and soul. You may realize you've been following your purpose in some small way all along.

Tip#606: Movies About the Homeless & Hope - It Happened on Fifth Avenue
One great benefit of going through the experience of bankruptcy (see tip#400) is that I am now debt free. It has also transformed my awareness and empathy for homeless people because I can now relate with having lost a home and most of my possessions. I now see street people with new, compassionate eyes.
On Nov. 15, 2012, Philanthropist Suzanne Rogers and more than 50 other business and community leaders slept on the streets of Toronto. It was for a fundraiser for Covenant House, who provides services and shelter for street youth. Others who joined in included Toronto Maple Leafs President Brian Burke, Arlene Dickinson of Dragons' Den, Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair and Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott. Read more about the Covenant House fundraiser in: The Toronto Star
Movies can also raise awareness of the homeless and demonstrate how compassion can make a world of difference to someone in difficult times.
It Happened on Fifth Avenue (1947)
The comedy, It Happened on Fifth Avenue, is about a homeless New Yorker named Aloyisius T. McKeever (Victor Moore) who secretly moves into a huge mansion. Along the way he brings in other homeless people where humorous situations result from their money generating ideas, mistaken identities and romance. It also gives you insights on the challenges that arose from The Great Depression for individuals and families.
I just discovered this hidden gem from the 40's and I can see this becoming a classic at Christmas time. It is such a feel good movie! There are also some great motivational quotes such as…
"For to be without friends is a serious form of poverty."
This comedy felt like a Frank Capra film like Mr. Deeds Goes to Town or It's A Wonderful Life. They all entertain as well as bring to light the realities of those hit by difficult times. They can help you reflect on your own blessings and open your heart more to those in need. Now whenever I look into the eyes of a street person asking for change I always do my best to give whatever I can AND with a smile. My own life experiences, though a challenge, helped open me up more to those in need.
Whatever you choose to do or think about the homeless is up to you. One thing for sure is that acknowledging a street person even with just a smile could make a big difference in their day. You'll also feel really good afterwards! Do it today!

Tip#605: We Are All On Different Paths – Knocked Up
Having said that, I am also very open to transforming parts of myself holding me back from my dreams and desires. That's where the magic of movie heroes can reflect ideas and thoughts for personal growth. Even from a raunchy comedy!
Knocked Up: Extended and Unrated (2007)
The romantic comedy Knocked Up is about Ben Stone (Seth Rogen) who has a one-night stand with Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl) and gets pregnant. This is a shock to both of their lives and careers and yet it becomes a hilarious and touching journey as they learn to adapt to change.
Ben eventually finds the courage to transform his slacker lifestyle in order to prepare for being a responsible father and husband to Alison. And though this was a rude and crude comedy you get to witness Ben's personal growth and confidence as he takes on his new role in life. Seeing this movie inspired me to look at my own life and be open to any radical lifestyle AND mindset changes necessary to move forward with my dreams.
We are all on different paths in our lives and it is so important to honour and embrace what we have chosen. It is equally important to be open to unexpected life changes that take us onto new paths. Just remember to stay positive and enjoy the journey!

Tip#604: Recognize Great Leaders - Lincoln
Do you realize how lucky and blessed we are living in a time where a black man can be President of the United States? As of this writing President Barack Obama has historically won a second term as the 44th President. While back in 1864 Abraham Lincoln was fighting to put through the 13th Amendment to free black people of slavery.
Lincoln (2012)
The biographical war drama, Lincoln is directed by Steven Spielberg and is about America's 16th president determined to emancipate black slaves while ending the Civil War. Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis) had a vision to free the slaves and faced great resistance on multiple fronts. All the performances in the film were powerful in depicting the emotions and opinions of 1864 while the settings were so rich with authentic detail that I felt transported back into history. See: movie trailer
Lincoln showed great perseverance and a strategic mind during his struggles. He also demonstrated a calming energy through his many engaging stories he’d tell. And because the film is based on true events, it also inspires by showing how positive change takes time, pain and, unfortunately, death for those fighting for it. So seeing this story now over 100 years later made me feel emotionally grateful for Lincoln’s conviction to follow his vision of freedom in our world.
Take time today to feel grateful for the multitude of leaders in history that helped make this a better world. Feel inspired by their strength and conviction. And if you feel compelled to make a positive change in society know that there are great people that have paved the way for you. The spirit of these great leaders will be cheering you on to persevere!

Tip#603: Find a Balance with the Old & New - Skyfall
As of this writing the latest actor to play James Bond is Daniel Craig who is 44 years old. The latest Bond film Skyfall has also been released on the 50th anniversary of the Bond film series. All this has synchronistic significance for me because I’m in my 40's and see the changing decades of the Bond movies as a mirror for what is obsolete or still relevant in my life today.
Just like Daniel Craig's reboot of the series with Casino Royale in 2006, I have been rebooting my own life and career. Craig's Bond has become a cinematic role model for me with his grittier, tenacious approach to accomplishing his goals. It's an energy that helps activate my courage and drive to really look at the old AND new in my life and find a harmonious balance between the best of both. The latest Bond film happens to explore these themes!
Skyfall (2012)
The action thriller, Skyfall is the 23rd spy film in the James Bond series with Daniel Craig starring for the 3rd time. Bond investigates a devastating attack on his spy organization MI6 which leads him to villain Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem). Along with the exotic locations, exciting action sequences, beautiful Bond girls and hi-tech gadgets we really get to know more about Bond and his past. See: movie trailer
The film deeply explores the "old" film world of Bond and how it fits into the "new" world. Even the new Q (Ben Whishaw) is a much younger man representing the youth of today who are experts with online tech. For fans of the Bond series they will enjoy many nods to the past like the return of the classic Aston Martin DB5. In the end the questions of what is of great value of the past AND of the present can help you move forward towards the future you desire.
In the film, M (Judi Densch) shares this inspiring verse from Tennyson's Ulysses:
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
If you are at a point in your life where you feel stuck and need a reboot see this as a time to take inventory of what is obsolete from your past and what is of value to move forward. Then apply that thinking to your life today. Find a balance with the old and the new and you’ll be brimming with a new energy for the next stage in your life!

Tip#602: You Are Awesome! Part 1 – Validation (short film)
On Oprah Winfrey’s final show that aired May of 2011 she revealed deep insights she had discovered about people. Here’s one she shared…
"I've talked to nearly 30,000 people on this show, and all 30,000 had one thing in common: They all wanted validation. If I could reach through this television and sit on your sofa or sit on a stool in your kitchen right now, I would tell you that every single person you will ever meet shares that common desire. They want to know: 'Do you see me? Do you hear me? Does what I say mean anything to you?'"
Oprah later says… "Try it with your children, your husband, your wife, your boss, your friends. Validate them. 'I see you. I hear you. And what you say matters to me.'"
Validation (2007)
The romantic comedy fable Validation is a short film about a parking attendant named Hugh (T.J.Thyne) who gives his customers real validations. He gives them heartfelt compliments. That’s all I’m going to write because I want you to watch this magical feel good 16 minute movie right now! See: full movie
I rarely feature short films on this blog and yet this movie has become one of my favourites. There are important life lessons in this whimsical story and every performance or scene will put a big smile on your face! Mostly, it demonstrates what Oprah was sharing in her final show about how important validation is for each and every person on this planet.
So if you really want to bond with someone or make a person feel good, doesn’t it make perfect sense to acknowledge that person in some way? Give someone a compliment and make them smile today. Or say… 'I see you. I hear you. And what you say matters to me.’ Oh and remember, YOU are AWESOME!

Tip#601: Benefits of Alternate Reality Movies – Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
Albert Einstein
"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them."
Albert Einstein
These are two quotes I absolutely love because they are a constant reminder that the only way to break out of repetitive life challenges is to rewrite what you think you know. Transforming old habits of thinking is the key to breaking free and that's why movies about time travel and alternate realities helps expand one's imagination to what is possible.
I am now entering my 7th year of writing this movie blog and it has been a long journey documenting the tools and methods I've learned to overcome challenges that keep repeating. Author John Assaraf and his term "neural reconditioning" have been very helpful (see tip#576). Movies about alternate realities have also helped to activate my imagination and build my optimistic mindset.
Here is a list of my top 10 Alternate Reality Movies: click here
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)
The action fantasy horror film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is about the 16th President of the United States (Benjamin Walker) who made it his mission to eliminate vampires since they killed his mother when he was a boy. Along the way Lincoln is aided by other historical figures such as Mary Todd Lincoln (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Joshua Speed (Jimmi Simpson). See: movie trailer
I'll admit when I first read the movie title I laughed and thought it was a silly concept. But after I read some positive reviews gave it a chance and I was surprised at how drawn into this alternate reality of Lincoln I became. The rich detail of the period costumes, sets and locations helped me to embrace this fantasy story. This was a perfect example of my brain rewiring to allow a new concept to be accepted.
If you are finding yourself caught in a same situation over and over again recognize it as a big sign that it is time to rewrite your thinking. See it as a sign to explore concepts you would normally reject. Expand your imagination and imagine that you have an alternate reality where that version of you has all the answers you seek! Be bold and ask that person for a little advice today!

Tip#600: Everything is Connected, Part 2 - Past Lives - Cloud Atlas
Today is Halloween Day and 2 days after Hurricane Sandy hit New York state and then caused a power outage for over 35,000 homes here in Toronto. I am one of those homes and am writing this at a friend's house I am sleeping at. As far as I know I may not have power for another 2 days. What a way to celebrate my 600th blog tip! At the same time my heart goes out to every single person who has been affected by the hurricane.
When disasters strike close to home I always feel blessed for the good friends I can count on when I need help. I actually believe I've known my closest friends from a previous life and have playfully imagined the kinds of relationships we had like being siblings, mother, father, husband, wife, etc. To us it often explained why we felt instantly close or can easily deal with each other's quirks and foibles. Yesterday I went to see Cloud Atlas for a 2nd time with 2 friends I believe we had past lives together.
Cloud Atlas (2012)
The science fiction drama Cloud Atlas explores how characters in 6 different stories and time periods are interconnected through the decisions and actions they take when faced with a challenge. The film has been referred to as a form of "quantum narrative". The stories feature the same actor playing up to 6 different characters, some in another gender and/or race. For example Halle Berry plays a white Jewish woman in 1936 and then a male, Chinese doctor in the 22nd century.
For me it was a much richer experience seeing the movie again because I recognized even more of the cast playing other roles in each story like the surprising Hugh Grant. Plus I identified more of how many amazing details of each story related to each other as they intercut throughout the film. In fact I could almost feel my brain being rewired to understand a non-linear narrative! Reincarnation is alluded to and it may get you thinking about some of the close relationships in your life and how you may have known each other in a past life.
As I write this 600th blog post on the cusp of a milestone birthday I feel so happy and grateful for movies like Cloud Atlas. It embodied so much of why I have a passion for films. It took me away to another world and filled me with so much energy. It had exciting visuals in the 2 Sci Fi stories and many spiritual concepts I believe in. It had movie heroes that persevered in difficult times and loving relationships that helped each other. I saw myself in these heroes and I saw my friends and family in the people that supported them.
Before challenges or disasters enter your life, make sure you've surrounded yourself with good friends and family. They will be your strength when the lights go off. And if you feel you've known certain people in a past life perhaps it's because it is real. Whether or not there is any proof in your feeling, just embrace that possibility because it will mean you share a love that transcends all of time!
