Tip#530: How Movies Mirror Your Inner Strengths, Part 1 - The Color of Money

“You gotta have two things to win. You gotta have brains and you gotta have balls. Now, you got too much of one and not enough of the other.”
The Color of Money (1986)

Recently, I've been in the process of formalizing something I love to do into a coaching/consulting service. This is providing movie prescriptions for people stuck in their life, career, business or workplace. I already do this on this movie blog and with anyone I meet who needs motivation. I was feeling stuck about creating some service packages so I meditated on what movie would help me gain insights and the film The Color of Money came to mind.

Synchronistically, this film was release the same year (1986) I formalized my love for art and illustration into a business and founded Crackers World Communications. At the time it developed very easily because I had many mini-mentors in the illustration industry to guide my passion towards helping magazine or newspaper articles and advertising purposes and be paid for it. The Color of Money film helped me identify key success factors I needed to focus on for the new, exciting services I wanted to develop now.

The Color of Money (1986)

The movie The Color of Money continues the story of pool hustler and stakehorse "Fast Eddie" Felson (Paul Newman) from the 1959 film The Hustler. In the story Fast Eddie is retired but revitalizes his spirit when he encounters a highly skilled but unfocused protégé named Vincent (Tom Cruise). Fast Eddie takes Vincent and his girlfriend on the road and teaches him how to play the game of pool hustling.

"If you got an area of excellence, you’re good at something, you’re the best at something,
anything, then rich can be arranged. I mean rich can come fairly easy.”

Insights from a Movie

The insights I received from this film were many. I saw myself in Fast Eddie in that he revitalizes his life and sense of purpose at his age. I also saw myself in Vincent in that he had a gift and took it further with guidance from a mentor/coach. Since then I reached out to other life, career and business coaches that are also friends for advice. This movie helped me get unstuck.

I also realized my confidence and self-worth needed a boost for monetizing something that comes so naturally for me. I made a list of the uniqueness of my gifts (USP, Unique Selling Proposition) that helped me identify my expertise. 4 examples are:

1) I HAVE a vast knowledge of movies that motivate
2) I HAVE written over 500 movie tips already online
3) I CAN instantly provide a movie prescription for someone
4) I AM an excellent motivator, facilitator, speaker, consultant, coach

Making a list like this for yourself is sure to increase your own self-worth and confidence.

Movies have the power to mirror what you need to be aware of to move forward when you feel stuck or lost. Movie heroes can remind you of your inner strengths, skills and gifts even if you've completely forgotten. Remembering your strengths will then re-activate your confidence AND self-worth so you can achieve your dreams and goals. Find a movie hero today to remind you of your greatness!
