Tip#529: Be Open to Evolving – Johnny Depp – 21 Jump Street

I grew up enjoying the TV show 21 Jump Street in the late 80's. Little did I know that it's star, Johnny Depp, would evolve into a megastar and a chameleon of an actor! For over 2 decades Depp has created many memorable characters in films such as: Edward Scissorhands, Chocolat, Pirates of the Caribbean, Alice in Wonderland, Rango and on and on and on!

Depp just keeps evolving his screen personas. And I found that I had to evolve my own sense of thinking when I saw the trailer of the new 21 Jump Street movie. The trailer looked nothing like the TV show I knew and loved. It looked like a complete reboot or a re-imagining because it seemed like a raunchy comedy. But I kept an open mind and saw it and I was surprised to be treated on many levels! See: movie trailer

21 Jump Street 2012

The action comedy 21 Jump Street is a loose sequel to the 1987 TV series of the same name. Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) first meet in high school and later attend police academy together. They are then reassigned undercover into a high school through a special division called 21 Jump Street.

The film is a hilarious departure from the tone of the original series with very engaging performances from the leads. There are even some nice life lessons that shine through for Schmidt and Jenko both personally and as friends. And yes there are cameos from the original TV series including Johnny Depp. His cameo is so fun and clever that it's best you see the film as soon as possible before anyone else blows the surprise!

Sometimes change is uncomfortable. That's why it's best to have an open mind and allow your thinking to be flexible. The world continually evolves whether you want it or not in our culture, technology, social media and even how stories are told. Be open to evolving and you will truly benefit from what you learn and discover!
