Tip#880: How Movies Help You Visualize Success, Part 2 - Health & Wellness - Fantastic Voyage

“You'll wind up a Hindu; and love all forms of life, no matter how small.”
Fantastic Voyage (1966)

I am excited to have discovered a promising solution to improving my health and wellness that goes hand in hand with the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) work I’ve been doing (see tip#855). I am currently reading Brain Maker by renowned physician and neurologist Dr. David Permutter who says there is a huge brain-gut connection that is the cause of depression and other debilitating brain disorders like autism, ALS and ADHD.

Here is a overview of 5 key points from Brain Maker by Brian Johnson through his Philosophers Notes video. See: video clip

1. 100 trillion microbial friends live in our gut that affect our brain health
2. We have a 2nd brain in our gut with neurons producing 80 to 90% of the feel good chemical serotonin
3. 70 to 80% of our immune system is in our gut
4. Probiotics in fermented foods like yogurt and supplements are needed in gut
5. Diet will optimize our brain and body via 6 keys such as eating probiotic rich foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi and eat low carbs higher healthy fat foods as well as prebiotics to nourish the healthy bacteria

Two recommended video clips:
DAVID PERLMUTTER, M.D. author of Brain Maker, part 1
DAVID PERLMUTTER, M.D. author of Brain Maker, part 2

Brain Maker not only gave me a simple direction to improve my physical and mental health it also fired up my imagination about the trillions of microbial friends living inside me! I began thinking of Dr. Seuss’s Horton Hears a Who animated TV show I loved as a kid and also Marvel’s Ant-Man film (see tip#870) that all presented imaginative microscopic worlds. Another related movie I loved growing up was Fantastic Voyage.

Fantastic Voyage (1966)

The science fiction adventure film, Fantastic Voyage, is about a medical team shrunk to microscopic size and venture into a human body to repair damage to the brain. With stunning visuals for its time this film won two academy awards for Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects. Memorable performances from the cast include Stephen Boyd, Donald Pleasence, Edmond O’Brien, Arthur O'Connell and Raquel Welch. See: original 60's movie trailer

When I started reading Brain Maker I watched Fantastic Voyage for the first time in decades and it triggered nostalgic memories from its wondrous music, beautifully designed submarine (the Proteus) and the stirring visuals of traveling through blood vessels, the heart and the brain.

Being immersed in the film’s microscopic imagery inspired me to visualize my own gut and the trillion microbes that needed my attention and help. Since then I researched online, health food stores and talked to friends who've already discovered the health benefits of probiotic foods and supplements. I’ve made immediate changes to my diet and started taking a recommended probiotic product called Ultimate Flora with each capsule containing 50 billion live cultures and 10 strains of microflora essential to revitalizing my gut.

These amounts may sound staggering but I am now visualizing that I am helping these trillions of living microbes within me after years of a poor, neglected diet. I remain hopeful that my diet and lifestyle changes help eliminate my depression once and for all and return me back to my energetic, playful, social self! I have shows like Horton Hears a Who, Ant-Man and Fantastic Voyage to thank for helping me visualize the world of my inner body!

Your personal health and wellness can sometimes be a challenge to manage. Movies, especially favourite ones, can be powerful tools to stimulate your imagination and keep an open mind for solutions already at hand. Let them inspire you to visualize the success you crave in your life, health, work or career!

Tip#879: Keep Believing & Persevere, Part 2 - Little Boy

“Yes I believe I can do this!”
Little Boy (2015)

I recently attended a full day workshop called 8 Simple Steps That Can Turn Your Dreams & Goals Into Reality facilitated by my good friend Patrick Bizindavyi and Paul Renie of Unleashed Possibilities Inc. One of the key factors they emphasized was the importance of belief in oneself and in our goals.

They also encouraged the group to share details of our dreams and goals and I openly shared that this year has been focused on improving my mental health because of chronic depression and that my goal was to assemble a dream team to help manage and market my motivational speaker services and movie tips archive.

It felt great to instantly get support by other attendees who I felt strong synergy with for potential work connections! Since I’ve been working on increasing belief in myself and my goals for years I believe people can sense that positivity and confidence. Belief in your self can be very magnetic!

Little Boy (2015)

The war drama film, Little Boy, is about an 8-year-old boy named Pepper (Jakob Salvati) who goes on a mission to increase his power of believing in himself in order to save his father captured by the Japanese during World War II. This highly inspirational and emotional movie has many life lessons about bullying, racism, hope and faith. This trailer is very inspiring in itself!: movie trailer

This film has been getting mixed reviews and there are some aspects that do feel odd and yet I feel the movie was still heartfelt and moving. One of the executive producers was Roma Downey who starred in the TV series Touched by an Angel which helped me through depression many years ago. That series was another uplifting resource that helped me believe in myself when I was stuck in a dark time!

Inspiring Themes:
• Self-confidence
• Belief, Hope & Faith
• Dealing with death
• Family
• Optimism
• Perseverance
• Resilience

Increasing belief in yourself and your dreams and goals is like energy fueling your drive and perseverance in difficult times. Find movies and people who can inspire you to find your inner strengths today!

Tip#878: Unleash Your Fearless Confidence, Part 1 - Hysteria

I recently had a unique and exciting day at Canada’s Wonderland thanks to VIP passes from Bill Sweetman, my friend, client and founder of the domain name service Name Ninja. One of the highlights of the day was seeing the stunning full-sized animatronic dinosaurs in the Dinosaurs Alive exhibit. It was the closest experience to visiting the park in the Jurassic World film!

I also faced big fears riding top-level intensity roller coasters. Some we rode while it rained! Bill loved roller coasters which I’m not a fan of but felt this was an opportunity to be fearless and “go along for the ride”! The first drop on the Behemoth ride was absolutely scary because it was so high and felt almost inverted during the drop! We went on seven rides and despite a headache and a bit a nausea I was proud of myself for being fearless and building my self-confidence!

Hysteria (2011)

The romantic comedy film, Hysteria, is about life in the Victorian era of 1880, the medical diagnosis of female hysteria and the invention of the vibrator for medical treatments. Highly entertaining with funny and strong performances by Hugh Dancy (Dr. Mortimer Granville), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Charlotte Dalrymple), Felicity Jones (Emily Dalrymple), Jonathan Pryce (Dr. Dalrymple), and Rupert Everett (Lord Edmund St. John-Smythe). See: movie trailer

Aside from hilarious scenes involving of the invention and testing of the vibrator, what stood out for me were the strength, courage and confidence of both Dr. Granville and Charlotte. For example, Charlotte immediately shows up as a powerhouse of energy and passion despite her lack of social graces or manners. She later demonstrates strong convictions in her belief in helping the less fortunate and wanting to create a better world.

Inspiring Themes:
• Self-Confidence
• Courage, Conviction, Tenacity
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Indestructible Optimism
• Resilience
• Have a Vision
• Belief in Yourself
• Supportive Relationships
• Leadership & Teamwork

Movie heroes that exude fearless confidence, courage, conviction, tenacity, passion, resilience and indestructible optimism can inspire you to visualize these qualities within you. Be inspired today to activate your inner strengths!

Tip#877: Family & Nostalgic Memories, Part 3 - J.J. Abrams - Regarding Henry – Forever Young

My mom has been in town so lots of childhood memories have been brought up and discussed amongst my family. There was even a day when we ended up driving through the neighborhoods of two homes I grew up in from age 8 to end of my teen years. It was amazing to see old stores and favourite places to eat in the area that are still there but renamed or renovated!

This trip also felt synchronistic because the recent program I completed called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) involved reviewing our childhoods to identify the negative and positive core beliefs responsible for our current state of mental health (see tip#855 & #863). So it was very surreal actually seeing places I just wrote about in my review of my childhood!

These experiences inspired me to watch two favourite films from the early 90’s I hadn’t seen in awhile that had an amazing connection. The films were written by a very young J.J. Abrams who has become a superstar director and producer. He is currently directing the latest Star Wars chapter, The Force Awakens with the original cast Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford.

Regarding Henry (1991)

The drama film, Regarding Henry, is about how a ruthless lawyer named Henry Turner (Harrison Ford) struggling to regain his memory, speech and mobility after surviving a shooting. This highly entertaining movie features a fantastic performance by Ford as he is transformed into childlike man having to learn the basics of living again. Henry also learns new, loving values that bring him closer to his wife and daughter. See: movie trailer

Forever Young (1992)

The romantic drama with science fiction elements, Forever Young, is about a 1939 test pilot named Captain Daniel McCormick (Mel Gibson) who agrees to be put into suspended animation/frozen for one year to deal with grief of his girlfriend Helen (Isabel Glasser) who is in a coma. Daniel ends up waking up 53 years later. With beautiful music by Jerry Goldsmith this movie shows undying love and the love and support of friendship. This also stars a very young Elijah Wood as Nat. See: movie trailer

J. J. Abrams has helped revitalize the Mission Impossible movie series, the Star Trek franchise and now the Star Wars series. At the same time he had already written two favourite films that came out during happy times in the early 90’s and continue to inspire me today!

Revisiting old places you grew up with and movies you loved over the years can trigger nostalgic, feel good memories about family. Rediscover happy times from your past and get re-energized today.

Tip#876: Believe in Magic, Part 2 - She’s Funny That Way

I’m happy to say that during this summer my depression symptoms have dropped and remained very low. It could be because of the plenty of sunshine I’ve been getting as it relates to seasonal affective disorder (SAD). But I know that weekly interactions with other participants of the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) program I’ve attended and now completed have helped (see tip#855, tip#863, #867, #874). In fact each person seemed to coincidentally add very specific insights to improving my mental health, well being and the rebuilding of my thought patterns!

Another fact that seemed to be ironic and coincidental was my computer dying and having to rebuild it on my new used laptop. This was so parallel to my experiences with CBT and the rebuilding of my mind. Along with making new friends from the program I really feel some sort of magic about my current journey in life. It could be the happy child in me but since it makes me feel good to believe it then I’ll take it! To me synchronicity, chance encounters and coincidences have always been magic!

She’s Funny That Way (2015)

The comedy film, She’s Funny That Way, is about a Call Girl named Isabella/Izzy/Glow (Imogen Poots) who triggers a series of hilarious situations, coincidences and chance encounters when hired by her client and Broadway director Arnold Albertson (Owen Wilson) to star in his latest play. This movie is in the style of a classic Hollywood screwball comedy and filled with many funny performances by Jennifer Aniston, Rhys Ifans, Kathryn Hahn and many other cameos. See: movie trailer

At the beginning of the film, Isabella is telling a reporter the story of how actress Lana Turner was discovered only to be corrected of the real facts of the discovery. Isabella responded saying “Yeah it doesn’t really have the same magic though.” This is what I’m resonating with these days. I'm feeling good and flowing with optimism and a sense of fun! And this film is flowing with fun too.

Movies can be a great source of fun, magic and laughter. No matter how silly they get let the cinema inspire you to just feel good about yourself and your life.

Tip#875: Benefits of Box-Office Bombs, Part 2 - Aloha

“I think the sky is speaking to us. Something’s coming!”
Aloha (2015)

I’ve recently been sick in bed with stomach pains, chills and fever. I couldn’t do anything and it felt aweful! The benefits and optimistic point of view is that I’ve learned to take better care of myself from online research on many different abdominal pains, symptoms and remedies. Plus I’ve lost a little weight from my gut area in just a few days!

Just before I got sick I saw the new Fantastic Four reboot which was a huge, disappointing experience. This epic failure was even disowned by the director via a twitter posting just before the film’s release. The benefits of this box-office bomb? As of this writing I’m still not sure. I am still fascinated by reading the reviews by critics and the audience. There’s even online articles identifying all the reshoots that the film went through by the blonde wig the character Sue Storm (actor Kate Mara) wears flipping from one scene to another!

I was then strangely inspired to watch another critical and box-office bomb by one of my heroes, writer and director Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire). Thankfully this turned out to be a pleasant surprise!

Aloha (2015)

The romantic comedy, Aloha, is about a struggling military contractor Brian (Bradley Cooper) who returns to Hawaii, the site of his greatest career triumphs for career. There he reconnects with ex- love (Rachel McAdams) while unexpectedly falling for quirky Air Force watchdog Captain Ng (Emma Stone). There was great chemistry with all the leads, a super soundtrack, great Cameron Crowe dialogue and gorgeous locations in Hawaii. See: movie trailer

The critics really savaged this film. One of the complaints was Emma Stone’s character being a quarter Hawaiian and not looking the part. This didn’t bother me nor the reported lack of Hawaiian actors in the film (which is not true as they have supporting roles). I was still thoroughly entertained, followed the story clearly and was genuinely moved by emotional moments. There are also magical moments of Hawaiian mysticism sprinkled throughout. For me, these are the benefits of a box-office bomb! Cameron Crowe is still my hero even if others feel he failed!

Inspiring Themes:
• Learning to communicate (body language)
• Supportive Relationships
• Integrity
• Respect of Cultural Beliefs
• Redemption

Not every film is going to be liked by someone. The benefits of a box-office or other films is that they affect you in a positive way, they motivate and inspire you, they add some sort of light into your life. So be cautious of what critics, audiences, co-workers, friends and even family say about a movie. That same film could make a huge difference in your life or career!
