I always get excited when I read about other people who find movies to be powerful tools for dealing with depression as I have countless times. At this time of year (between October and April) a type of depression known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) affects people’s moods due to the lack of light and changes in season. This is a time when films can be of enormous assistance.
Therese J. Borchard is the author of Beyond Blue: Surviving Depression & Anxiety and Making the Most of Bad Genes. She says…
“Among my strongest tools to combat depression is distraction. And one of the best distractions is watching a movie. Watching the right movie has an antidepressant effect, as it relieves the brain of the obsessive, ruminating, self-defeating loop for two consecutive hours. The brain can readjust a little during those 120 minutes and is a bit kinder when the film is over.”

Film critic Thom Ernst also credits the movies for bringing him back from a depression following a heart attack says…
“I cannot underplay the role friends, family, and colleagues played in helping me through the depression. Movies are not in and of themselves the way out of a depression — they just happened to be one of the ways I got out of mine.”

Whether you are going through depression or other difficult challenges in life or at work movies will always be there to help you get through when things look hopeless.
Whiplash (2014)
The music drama film, Whiplash, is about a young jazz drummer named Andrew Neyman who endures the intense mentorship of a perfectionist music conductor Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons). The high-energy music is fantastic and performances riveting while the story becomes very thought provoking about how far a person will go to achieve greatness. See: movie trailer
Neyman pushes his resilience to the extremes with the amount of abuse Fletcher inflicts on him to be the best drummer possible. Though his journey is visceral, heartbreaking and, at times, painful to watch Fletcher's resilience shines through and ultimately takes his power back.
I highly recommend this electrifying film to inspire you to find your inner strengths and resilience for enduring the challenges you face at work and in life!
