I saw a friend I hadn’t seen in over a year who has been dealing with multiple health issues and chronic pain. What surprised me was she still maintained her lively tone of voice and spirit. I asked her what was keeping her so positive and she said it was laughter!
Afterwards I watched a new comedy called They Came Together because the trailer looked funny and it got a great review by Norm Wilner at Now Magazine (see review). And even though I was exhausted and getting over a cold the film made me laugh so much that it re-energized me immediately!
They Came Together (2014)
The romantic comedy film, They Came Together, is a parody of romantic comedies with Molly (Amy Poehler) and Joel (Paul Rudd) telling their story of how they met and fell in love. The movie is so packed full of stars and hilarious references and takes on countless romcoms that I knew 15 minutes into the story that I had to see it again! The humor was so loopy, kooky and smart though at the same time wonderfully stupid and weird! See: movie trailer
The film just has this underlying happy and fun vibe about it that I’m sure this will be one movie I’ll want to see when I’m feeling down. If this film isn’t your taste I highly recommend making a list of your favourite comedies. This will become your own personal “movie prescriptions” list for lifting your spirits up. Laughter is an amazing tonic to re-energize you when you need it most!

Tip#768: Have a Vision, Part 2 - The Grand Budapest Hotel
It was a fantastic and surreal moment standing in front of the two audiences at the 2014 COSTI Conference and telling my story about the financial crisis and bankruptcy I experienced. COSTI is one of Canada’s largest multicultural organizations and my topic was called “Increase Your Resilience Now”. I did a keynote for the morning audience and then a second for the afternoon.
It was surreal because was sharing the vision I had during my adversities four years ago that kept me resilient. While my world was crumbling around me I pictured myself one day on stage sharing how I got through such a painful, debilitating time. This vision would be the destination I would focus on. This was the story I focused on.
And this conference marked the first time my vision came true! I could now help others with how having a vision is one of my three key factors for resilience. Imagination, vision and storytelling are powerful tools we can all access to empower our lives and work during difficult times.
Three Key Factors for Resilience:
1) Re-energize Yourself
2) Activate Indestructible Optimism
3) Grow Social Support & Team Spirit
“You have revolutionized how I now view movies, as there could be valuable lessons to be captured. You have made a positive impression that changed my life. Thank you Emmanuel.”
Felix Amato, COSTI Conference 2014
“Thank you for sharing such an inspiring and motivational speech at our Costi event. I was touched by your journey and the challenges you faced. Wow!”
Chris Bent, COSTI Conference 2014
“Thank you Emmanuel for inspiring and motivating me, in that moment of time you were a lighthouse in the fog.”
Nigel Campbell, COSTI Conference 2014
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
The comedy drama, The Grand Budapest Hotel, is a story told in several different time periods about an author’s memorable experiences of this hotel in a European alpine state. This is another of director Wes Anderson’s extremely playful, imaginative and visually stunning films that celebrates creative storytelling. He always has a strong vision of how his movies are told. And you will notice each time period has a different aspect ratio in the film e.g. widescreen, full screen. See: movie trailer
Every scene and setting was like a living cartoon filled with colorful characters played by a star-studded cast that include: Ralph Fiennes, F. Murray Abrahams, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jason Schwartzman, Jude Law, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and others!
Let this film inspire your own imagination, your vision and the stories you tell yourself in your mind. Believe that you are writing your life story and that it can be bright and full of accomplishment! Just remember you need a vision to begin!

Tip#767: You Can Rewrite Your Life, Part 5 – I’ll Follow You Down
One of the most vivid dreams I ever had was about realizing my life was an experiment that was like a living comic book and that I get to create the story. The dream was more of an out-of-body experience and I felt so hyper aware I was given some higher truth to my existence that I started to sob deeply. When I awoke I was actually crying.
Recent time travel movies continued to remind me that I had the power to write or rewrite my life situations. X-Men Days of Future Past and Edge of Tomorrow both excited and moved me with how the movie heroes persevered through intense challenges in order to rewrite their present adversities into positive futures. Time travel movies always encourage me to see life from multiple perspectives!
I’ll Follow You Down (2014)
The science fiction drama film, I’ll Follow You Down, is about the emotional repercussions experienced by a scientist’s wife, son and grandfather when he mysteriously disappears. Years later a shocking discovery reveals that the scientist (Rufus Sewell) traveled back in time and unexpectedly created a time line his family was not suppose to experience. More drama than science fiction thrills this engaging film features a great cast including Haley Joel Osment, Gillian Anderson and Victor Garber. See: movie trailer
I do wish the film continued longer than where it ended and yet the story was still a very unique take on time travel movies. This film was thought provoking on how the decisions we make in life can have lasting effects on people around us either positive or negative. The story can remind you that each choice you make is a focal point in your life that will cause a ripple effect. Ultimately time travel movies like this one can remind you to be more mindful of others when you make a decision in your work and life.
The ability to rewrite your present challenges towards a positive future is one thing. Being able to rewrite it so that it also benefits others you love and who love you in return would be a fantastic goal to achieve!

Tip#766: Great Leadership in Movies, Part 2 - How to Train Your Dragon 2
I recently saw a good friend’s 9 year-old son who I hadn’t seen in six months and is starting to look like a little man! He reminded me of the visible changes of my nephew as I watched him grow up into a teen. And it is inspiring to see that each of them continue to show signs of great leadership skills every time I see them.
I loved the first How to Train Your Dragon movie with its leadership and teamwork themes and happy to say that the second film expands on the first in so many wonderful ways. It takes place 5 years after the first film so the boy hero Hiccup is visibly older as a young adult. I’ve read that director Dean DeBlois plans this as a trilogy where we get to witness Hiccup grow older and into his destined role as a leader and chief of his Viking village.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)
The computer-animated action fantasy film, How to Train Your Dragon 2, follows the adventures of Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his dragon Toothless as they face a villain named Drago (Djimon Hounsou) who is building a dragon army to conquer the world. Despite what others believe Hiccup has a strong vision of a peaceful world and believes he can transform the villain’s mindset like he did with his father Stoick (Gerard Butler). The movie is filled with awe-inspiring scenes of flying and fantastic visuals of old and new dragons that will take your breath away. See: movie trailer
Motivating Themes in this Film:
• Leadership
• Teamwork
• Power in community spirit
• Excelling despite disabilities
• Loyalty, family and friendship
• Transforming a negative mindset
• Having a vision
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Optimism
• Resilience
This film is so rich with entertainment and motivational themes that I highly recommend you see it on the big screen for maximum experience. I believe people of all ages will get something of tremendous value from this movie. And if you want inspiration for your leadership or teamwork and the power of community spirit this is the film for you!
“You have the heart of a chief and the soul of a dragon.”

Tip#765: Be Inspired by Someone’s Journey - Tanzania: A Journey Within
I love learning about the journeys that famous people experienced because I learn something new about myself and of the world. And then there are friends and everyday people who inspired me just hearing about their life-changing journeys like speaker Patrick Bizindavyi. He experienced challenging times when he lived in Burundi, Africa and learned how to stay resilient despite overwhelming adversities (see tip#523).
I recently had the honor of previewing a new documentary by my pal Sylvia Caminer who directed the outstanding documentary on 80’s rocker Rick Springfield called An Affair of the Heart (see tip#539). Her latest is Tanzania: A Journey Within and I was immediately inspired just by watching the trailer! See: movie trailer
Tanzania: A Journey Within (2014)
The documentary, Tanzania: A Journey Within, is about two friends who have life-changing experiences when they see life in Tanzania, Africa. After nine years in the US, Venance returns home with his American friend Kristen who experiences both the overflowing beauty and heartbreaking sorrows of Africa.
I was inspired on so many levels by Tanzania: A Journey Within. The film is a celebration of life despite the hardships living in Africa. The two central heroes demonstrated such courage and resilience making me feel deeply connected to each of their journeys of soulful self-discovery.
The film, with its gorgeous photography, opened my eyes to Africa’s beauty as well as the struggles of daily life and the many heartwarming communities. I highly recommend this inspiring documentary to escape into the hidden heart of Africa that will help you feel massively appreciative of all you have in your life.
As of this writing the film has not been officially released. I recommend seeing the trailer as it shows the power of the movie! See: movie trailer
“We go through hardship and then we celebrate because in hardship we learn. Especially the harder the day the better the celebration will be.”

Tip#764: Passion is Fuel, Part 3 – Food Films - Haute Cuisine
“There is nothing more cinematic and exciting than watching food be prepared.”
Jon Favreau, Actor, Writer & Director “Chef”
My passion for movies is matched only by my love for delicious food! And as in the quote above I also love watching food being prepared so much that I love taking photos at friend’s places where we share tasty meals. The colourful sights and aromas always lift my spirits and excite me no matter what I am going through in life!
This re-energizing feeling permeated the film Chef that featured an overflowing stream of tantalizing food scenes (see tip#763)! And it also flows in a French film featuring dishes that will get your mouth watering with delight called Haute Cuisine. If you love food then these two films can act as re-energizing resources whenever you feel down or stuck in life!
Haute Cuisine (2013) also known as Les Saveurs du Palais
The French comedy-drama film is loosely based on the memories of Danièle Delpeuch, the first and only female chef having worked for the French President at the Palais de l'Elysée. Renowned chef Hortense Laborie (Catherine Frot) is surprised when asked to be the private chef for the President of France (Jean d'Ormesson). His desire was to have the same find of food he enjoyed that his grandmother used to make growing up. See: movie trailer
Hortense is also inspiring because of her leadership abilities and strength in spirit as she faces adversities. She must constantly deal with jealous resentment from other kitchen staff. Her passion for her cuisine creations is also evident as she goes to great lengths to get the finest of ingredients and how she checks to see what is left on the plates after meals!
I highly recommend seeing Haute Cuisine to excite your taste buds, inspire your passion and re-energize your life and work with the strong, resilient spirit of the female movie hero!
“Personally, it’s adversity that keeps us on our toes. It’s a spice of life.”

Tip#763: Passion is Fuel, Part 2 - Food Films - Chef
June 5th 2014 was one of the greatest days I’ve had in a long time. On that sunny, warm day I gave two successful keynotes at a conference for COSTI, one of Canada’s largest multicultural organizations (details in an upcoming post). I met so many warmhearted people there and when I returned home to check my emails discovered numerous job offers for my services! I believe this is the result of having committed years to my passion for movies and my desire to motivate and inspire others. And despite getting hit by many adversities, my passion was definitely fuel for keeping me resilient!
Passion has an interesting definition which I like to share in my motivational talks. Passion is defined as: A powerful feeling. The object of such love and desire, great enthusiasm, anger or rage. There is a fantastic film called Chef with a movie hero demonstrating every aspect of that definition especially how anger and rage can ultimately be a positive factor in fueling success in life and career.
Chef (2014)
The comedy drama, Chef, is about Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) who has a huge passion for cooking. After receiving a negative review by a food blogger (Oliver Platt) Chef Carl quits his restaurant job and expresses his anger via Twitter while videos of his rage get posted online. It then becomes a journey of having his passion fuel his next step that involves investing in his own food truck. This funny and engaging film will treat you to the visually delicious results of Chef Carl’s passion in a constant flow of mouthwatering foods being made and enjoyed! See: movie trailer
The great cast also includes Scarlett Johannson, John Leguizamo, Sofia Vergara, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Downey Jr. and EmJay Anthony as Chef Carl’s son, Percy. Canadian comedian Russell Peters has a funny cameo too! The vibrant soundtrack also adds a sumptuous Latin flavour to the movie hero’s journey. Favreau was also the writer, director and co-producer of this indie film which makes it a true labour of love for him.
Read how another great foodie movie, Big Night, inspired Favreau to make his own food movie: Richardcrouse.ca
This wonderful film inspired me on so many levels. Chef is definitely the greatest movie about enjoying food AND for showing the power of social media I have ever seen! The movie also demonstrates the key ingredients to overcoming challenges in life and career such as: Following a passion, social support and resilience. I highly recommend you see today!

Tip#762: Learning from Mistakes - Edge of Tomorrow
The romantic comedy Groundhog Day is one of my top favourite movies of all time! It is also a key film I highly recommend in my motivational talks as an important self-growth tool. It’s about learning from mistakes. The movie can help people to look at the repetitive issues or failures that keep coming up in their lives and how they provide solutions of breaking free and achieving goals.
So I was excited to attend a sneak preview of a science fiction version of Groundhog Day and very happy to say that Edge of Tomorrow is a highly entertaining action film combined with important life lessons of learning from mistakes! Successes such as basketball player Michael Jordan and inventor Thomas Edison are excellent examples of going through repetitive failures only to persevere towards their goals like the hero in Edge of Tomorrow.
“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Michael Jordan
“I have not failed 10,000 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving that those 10,000 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work.” Thomas Edison
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
The science fiction film, Edge of Tomorrow, is about Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) caught in a time loop and reliving a specific day of a doomed battle with an invading alien race. The film is a cross between Groundhog Day and Starship Troopers and is filled with exciting action scenes as well as time loop sequences that will keep your mind riveted. See: movie trailer
The life lessons revolve around Cage’s unusual journey of personal growth. He is first introduced as a coward lacking confidence or courage. When he is thrown into his time loop and discovers his goal for breaking free he can only learn from his mistakes in order to move closer and closer to his goal. Along the way he develops his confidence, courage and leadership abilities.
Repeated failures and mistakes are all part of finding success in life, career and work. Be inspired by movie heroes and real-life success stories to persevere with your own repeating challenges!

Tip#761: You Can Rewrite Your Life, Part 4 - Maleficent
I’ve shared many times in my motivational talks that a primary key for helping me stay optimistic and confident during times of depression, financial crisis and burnout was to re-write the present adversities into the positive reality I desired. Re-writing, reprogramming and rebooting were all important terms for transforming my mindset to move forward from debilitating challenges.
I love the current cinematic examples of re-imagined characters and films that mirror the process of re-writing your life. At first I may have resisted the idea of re-imagined versions of Star Trek, James Bond and Batman films and yet once I surrendered to experiencing a new vision I soon changed my mind. I ended up loving actor Daniel Craig’s version of James Bond in Casino Royale and director Christopher Nolan’s vision of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I really had to let go of my previous mindset in order to have room to embrace something new and even more exciting!
Maleficent (2014)
The fantasy adventure film, Maleficent, is a live-action re-imaging of Walt Disney’s 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty. The story shows Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) growing up as a good and powerful faerie and reveals the traumatic and sad reasons for becoming evil. Jolie gives a fantastic and heartfelt performance within a visually stunning and rich fantasy world. I was so fully immersed in this truly magical reality! See: movie trailer
I am still in awe of how it felt like I was in another world in this movie much like my experience in seeing Avatar. It’s as if the film screen enveloped all my senses and could almost taste and touch the breathtaking faerie world. I discovered after the screening that the first time director, Robert Stromberg won an Oscar for Best Art Direction on Avatar.
It was surreal watching this re-written vision of what I remember of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty so long ago. And I could really feel this was another cinematic message for letting go of my previous thoughts and being open to another perspective. And though this film features some disturbing scenes and acts of cruelty it is still filled with uplifting life lessons such as kindness towards differences, redemption and the power of true love.
