Tip#759: Expand Your Mind with Time Travel Movies, Pt 2 - X-Men: Days of Future Past

Seeing the X-Men: Days of Future Past movie was one of the most exciting and deeply felt cinematic experiences I have ever had. Reflecting its time travel themes this film thrilled my inner geek from the past for bringing to life a comic book story that inspired my imagination and art in my teens. Secondly it showed an emotional scene of a future character speaking to his younger self going through a painful and difficult time. He was empowering his younger self by encouraging him to be strong and that he’ll get through his current adversity.

I was moved by this scene because this profound interaction touched on identical spiritual, metaphysical exercises I’ve been practicing for years to build my indestructible optimism during the depression and financial challenges I’ve experienced. This involves forms of meditation and creative visualizations to connect with my future self that has already accomplished all my dreams and goals I struggled with.

Matthew McConaughey’s Future Self Speech

Connecting with your successful future self was also one of the three keys to success that actor Matthew McConaughey shared during his acceptance speech for his 2014 Best Actor Oscar. He explained that his need to chase a hero comes in the form of himself 10 years into the future. It may sound odd at first but McConaughey is saying his hero is his successful future self.

Future Pacing

Future Pacing is a personal growth technique connected to NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) and creative visualization. It is a practice that I teach in my motivational talks and one of the most empowering and fun, interactive exercises for focusing your dreams and goals while also increasing your self-confidence, enthusiasm and optimism. The concept is about connecting with your future self that has already achieved the dreams and goals you desire. 22-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, author J.K. Rowlings and actor Jim Carrey all have utilized creative visualization for achieving their successes.

Future Self Meditation

I found found future self meditations to be very powerful! What has helped was going on YouTube and finding guided meditations that helped relax my mind and then connect with my most powerful and positive future self for guidance. This is one of my favourites by Holly Agnes Higgins: Your Future Self 20 min.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

The superhero action film, X-Men: Days of Future Past is an epic chapter in the X-Men movie series involving time travel and a fight for survival in two time periods for the future X-men team in 2020 and their younger selves in 1973. This exciting and highly entertaining film includes fantastic performances from a massive cast that includes the future versions of Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellan) and their younger versions placed by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) plays himself in both time periods. See: movie trailer

As a childhood comic book fan the film was rich in references to old and new characters that made the movie so enjoyable. For others it is still an epic action film filled with astounding visual effects and ingenious, humorous scenes e.g. Quicksilver. There are continuity issues with other X-Men films but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of this movie.

And, as with all the X-Men films, it is a social commentary on racism and genocide. Most of all, I love that this movie features a superb visual example of a personal development concept of being empowered by one’s future self through the character of Professor Charles Xavier.

So this film is not only a highly entertaining film it can also be experienced as another self-growth movie to inspire your own success in your business, workplace, career and life. It can introduce you to the visualizing techniques already used by well-known individuals that can be your success role-models!
