“We’re family. You got a problem we deal with it together.”
Fast & Furious 6 (2013)
Ever since I wrote the blog post for Swapsity.ca called “Tapping into the Power of Community to Find a New Apartment”, I have received an outpouring of support and have witnessed, once again, the power of social media. People that I knew and didn’t know were sharing the link to the blog post on their Facebook walls and other group walls. I was blown away by the sense of community I was feeling. It was feeling like an extended family of support.
Fast & Furious (2013)
The action film, Fast & Furious 6 is the sixth installment of the series featuring exciting, over the top vehicle chases, elaborate heists, sexy superhero like characters and very cool cars. The leader of the group, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) discovers that the women he loved, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) is still alive and makes it his goal to bring her back home because she is simply family. So with the help of agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), Toretto assembles his crew arriving from all over the world who completely support his goal. See: movie trailer
Though this film is filled with thrilling car chases and testosterone-injected dialogue and visuals there is the strong sense of family at the heart of the story. It’s about how far people will go to help someone that may not be of blood relations but are still seen as family. It’s an uplifting message and reminder that family can extend to the communities you feel drawn to or even online through social media communities. Family is a powerful, connecting feeling.

Someone once told me, “Members of our true family are not always born under the same roof.” The recent death of André the Giant, who played Fezzik in one my all-time favourite movies, The Princess Bride, reminded me how an unlikely group of brigands (Westley/aka The Dread Pirate Roberts, Inigo Montoya, and Fezzik) join together- first as allies but eventually functioning as family- helping each other meet their deepest needs. This wonderful story is set in the context of a loving grandfather caring for his ill grandson by sharing the “lame” story “with kissing!” that ends up forming a special bond across the generations. Of all the great lines in movies, one of the best (and one I have used with members of my own beloved family) are these words: “As you wish.”

yes! the bond is sooo tight. i think family is people who you know would be there for you know matter what, unconditionally. one film that pops to the top of my head is Spanglish.
