Tip#645: Fill Your Life with Wonder - Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium

I am very happy to announce that I am one of the adjudicators for the 2013 Multimedia Film Festival of York Region! It’s my job to watch, review and mark 65 short films under the topics of drama, animation and documentary. What is wonderful is that the entries come from a diverse age group ranging from age 6 in elementary schools through to secondary schools to professionals. See: Film Festival details

So far I’ve reviewed almost half of the entries and have witnessed so much imagination and intriguing ideas coming from kids and youths. It feels like I’m in a candy shop or toy store filled with films bursting with creativity and heart! Not all are technically polished but every one of them has an important story someone wanted to tell.

Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007)

The fantasy comedy drama, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, is about a magical, living toy store owned by the whimsical and kooky Mr. Edward Magorium (Dustin Hoffman). Molly Mahoney (Natalie Portman) is his employee who is also friends with Eric Applebaum (Zach Mills) a boy who regularly comes to the toy store. Together they thrill in the fantastic wonders of what the toy store offers and later they must face unexpected changes for the emporium. See: movie trailer

There is so much to look at in every colourful scene especially in the toy store. And it was fun to recognize areas that were filmed in my hometown of Toronto! There are also many life lessons in this movie to inspire you. Surprisingly this film has a beautiful message to help young ones deal with the loss of a loved one. Mr. Magorium becomes a wonderful teacher of how to live life to the fullest and also how to embrace and accept the end of an adventure.

Inspiring Themes:
• Finding your passion, gifts & “sparkle”
• Overcoming shyness
• Find a live/work balance
• Dealing with the end of something you love
• Dealing with the loss of a loved one

Motivating quotes from the film…

“Your life is an occasion, rise to it.”

“We breathe. We pulse. We regenerate. Our hearts beat. Our minds create. Our souls ingest. 37 seconds, well used, is a lifetime.”

“All stories, even the ones we love, must eventually come to an end. And when they do it’s only an opportunity for another story to begin!”

There is wonder all around us that can uplift our spirits and tickle our hearts and minds. Sometimes these wonders leave us and we can feel a deep loss. Take time today to look at life through the eyes of a child and feel how good it feels! Make sure the story of your life is filled with wonder and a sense of magic!
