Tip#596: Smile, Part 1 - Jeff Lynne of ELO - Modern Times (1936)

One of my all time musical heroes is Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra and I have been loving his songs since the late 70's. Whenever I need a quick boost of energy I always listen to ELO or his solo work! He recently released two new albums, one of which is called Long Wave, a collection of songs he loved growing up in Birmingham, England. There is one cover song on it that immediately touched my heart called Smile. Listen and see a great fan video: click here

The song Smile was originally instrumental music composed by Charlie Chaplin for his film Modern Times in 1936. Lyrics were later added in 1954 by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. I've been listening to Lynne's version of Smile everyday since its release. Perhaps it's because I've been having few sad days recently and it just lifts me up. It feels like an old friend reminding me to stay positive with the song's encouraging lyrics…

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through
for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile what’s the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile If you'll just
Smile

Modern Times (1936)

The comedy film Modern Times was written and directed by Charlie Chaplin who also starred as his famous Little Tramp character known as "A Factory Worker". The story is about struggles to survive during the Great Depression and how the Factory Worker playfully moves from one challenge after another. There is also a beautiful, whimsical love story that unfolds with a homeless woman known as "A Gamin" played by Paulette Goddard.

Although most of the movie is silent it is filled with many motivational themes that include perseverance, living with passion and having indestructible optimism. It will also make you laugh! And when the instrumental of Smile plays you will feel a warmth in your heart. And perhaps Lynne's version of Smile will warm your heart too like an old friend cheering you up in sad times.

Remember to listen to favourite songs whenever you feel down. Remember to watch a favourite comedy that will make you laugh when life seems dark. Everything will be okay as long as you remember to smile!
