Today is Halloween Day and 2 days after Hurricane Sandy hit New York state and then caused a power outage for over 35,000 homes here in Toronto. I am one of those homes and am writing this at a friend's house I am sleeping at. As far as I know I may not have power for another 2 days. What a way to celebrate my 600th blog tip! At the same time my heart goes out to every single person who has been affected by the hurricane.
When disasters strike close to home I always feel blessed for the good friends I can count on when I need help. I actually believe I've known my closest friends from a previous life and have playfully imagined the kinds of relationships we had like being siblings, mother, father, husband, wife, etc. To us it often explained why we felt instantly close or can easily deal with each other's quirks and foibles. Yesterday I went to see Cloud Atlas for a 2nd time with 2 friends I believe we had past lives together.
Cloud Atlas (2012)
The science fiction drama Cloud Atlas explores how characters in 6 different stories and time periods are interconnected through the decisions and actions they take when faced with a challenge. The film has been referred to as a form of "quantum narrative". The stories feature the same actor playing up to 6 different characters, some in another gender and/or race. For example Halle Berry plays a white Jewish woman in 1936 and then a male, Chinese doctor in the 22nd century.
For me it was a much richer experience seeing the movie again because I recognized even more of the cast playing other roles in each story like the surprising Hugh Grant. Plus I identified more of how many amazing details of each story related to each other as they intercut throughout the film. In fact I could almost feel my brain being rewired to understand a non-linear narrative! Reincarnation is alluded to and it may get you thinking about some of the close relationships in your life and how you may have known each other in a past life.
As I write this 600th blog post on the cusp of a milestone birthday I feel so happy and grateful for movies like Cloud Atlas. It embodied so much of why I have a passion for films. It took me away to another world and filled me with so much energy. It had exciting visuals in the 2 Sci Fi stories and many spiritual concepts I believe in. It had movie heroes that persevered in difficult times and loving relationships that helped each other. I saw myself in these heroes and I saw my friends and family in the people that supported them.
Before challenges or disasters enter your life, make sure you've surrounded yourself with good friends and family. They will be your strength when the lights go off. And if you feel you've known certain people in a past life perhaps it's because it is real. Whether or not there is any proof in your feeling, just embrace that possibility because it will mean you share a love that transcends all of time!

Tip#599: The Power of Movies and Songs – Pitch Perfect
Do you ever listen to a favourite song to lift yourself up? Do you ever watch a favourite movie to take you away from your problems? And do you feel better after having a good laugh? These are 3 important motivational resources I highly recommend when you are feeling down, lost or even hopeless in your life or career.
I mentioned in tip#596 that whenever I listen to ELO songs I always get a quick boost of energy. Songs like Livin' Thing, Don't Bring Me Down, Mr. Blue Sky and so many others always touch an emotional, timeless cord with me. And, as you know from this blog, movies play a big part in my well-being! Now imagine a film that combines and celebrates movies and song while adding a huge dose of comedy to make you laugh!
Pitch Perfect (2012)
The musical comedy Pitch Perfect is about Beca (Anna Kendrick), a freshman who joins her College's all-girl a capella singing group The Bellas in competition with their male rivals The Treble Makers. Beca is actually multi-talented as she sings AND is a talented song mixer. This film is just full of funny characters, amazing song arrangements and performances. See: movie trailer
One of the singers for the all-boy group, Jesse (Skylar Astin), is a movie lover and introduces Beca to the film The Breakfast Club. The movie and its song "Don't You (Forget About Me)" helps her transform a low period for her. Later it becomes key to her singing group's success AND their romantic relationship. Without saying any more, this movie instantly became one of my favourite movies and I highly recommend you see right now to get your toes tapping and lift your spirits sky high!
Whenever you are feeling low and need a boost of energy remember the power of movies, songs and laughter. Look at all your favourite films and music and see them as motivational resources you can count on to re-energize your drive, enthusiasm and positivity. And find ways to have a good laugh too, you'll feel so much better!

Tip#597: Find Your Voice - Sister Act
Are you still looking for your voice in life? Movies and movie heroes can inspire you to find your hidden strengths, talents, leadership skills and your voice. When you see the struggles of a film character and witness how they overcome their adversity with their mind, body or spirit it can reflect your own exciting possibilities!
I feel blessed because my art and illustration talents were nurtured growing up as a child by loving parents and supported by siblings, friends and teachers. That later gave me the confidence to develop other talents as a composer and singer that led to my debut music CD called Rain of Angels. Later I found support to develop my skills as a speaker, blogger and social media consultant. My voice was always to inspire and lead others to finding their own inner strengths. Everyone has a voice that is meant to be developed and shared with the world. You just have to take action in doing so.
Sister Act (1992)
The comedy musical film, Sister Act, is about a casino lounge singer named Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg) who witnesses a mob crime and is hidden as a nun at a convent by the police. Highly resistant to her forced hiding, Deloris is stripped of the life she preferred and tries to adjust with hilarious results. She soon applies her gifts in music and singing to the church choir with stunning and highly entertaining results!
"I worked my butt off with these women! They've given up their free time to do this, and they're GOOD! I mean, sister, we could, we could ROCK this place!"
This is one of those movies that I loved as entertainment when it first came out. 20 years later I enjoyed it through new eyes where I could appreciate many of the motivational elements of the story and characters. For example, Deloris stepped out of her victim mode and into a leadership position for the church choir. That action created a powerful sense of community previously missing from the choir members. And in the process Deloris helped each singer of the choir find their own unique voice. You could see how their faces shined as they were able to fully sing from their heart and soul!
Inspiring Themes:
• Self-Confidence
• Passion & Perseverance
• Resilience
• Leadership
• Teamwork & Team Spirit
• Supportive Relationships
• Community
• Self-Expression
• Finding your voice, gift or talent
If you have a hidden strength or voice you need help with then take a leadership position and seek out others who will support and encourage you to find it. Find people who will either teach you to develop it or point you to helpful resources. You were born with a unique voice that was meant to be heard in this world. Make sure you are using it today!
"Bless us, oh Lord, for these Thy gifts which we are about to receive. And yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of no food, I will fear no hunger. We want you to give us this day, our daily bread. And to the republic for which it stands, and by the power invested in me, I pronounce us ready to eat. Amen."

Tip#596: Smile, Part 1 - Jeff Lynne of ELO - Modern Times (1936)
One of my all time musical heroes is Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra and I have been loving his songs since the late 70's. Whenever I need a quick boost of energy I always listen to ELO or his solo work! He recently released two new albums, one of which is called Long Wave, a collection of songs he loved growing up in Birmingham, England. There is one cover song on it that immediately touched my heart called Smile. Listen and see a great fan video: click here
The song Smile was originally instrumental music composed by Charlie Chaplin for his film Modern Times in 1936. Lyrics were later added in 1954 by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. I've been listening to Lynne's version of Smile everyday since its release. Perhaps it's because I've been having few sad days recently and it just lifts me up. It feels like an old friend reminding me to stay positive with the song's encouraging lyrics…
Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through
for you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile what’s the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile If you'll just
Smile
Modern Times (1936)
The comedy film Modern Times was written and directed by Charlie Chaplin who also starred as his famous Little Tramp character known as "A Factory Worker". The story is about struggles to survive during the Great Depression and how the Factory Worker playfully moves from one challenge after another. There is also a beautiful, whimsical love story that unfolds with a homeless woman known as "A Gamin" played by Paulette Goddard.
Although most of the movie is silent it is filled with many motivational themes that include perseverance, living with passion and having indestructible optimism. It will also make you laugh! And when the instrumental of Smile plays you will feel a warmth in your heart. And perhaps Lynne's version of Smile will warm your heart too like an old friend cheering you up in sad times.
Remember to listen to favourite songs whenever you feel down. Remember to watch a favourite comedy that will make you laugh when life seems dark. Everything will be okay as long as you remember to smile!

Tip#594: You Are Not Alone - Henry Poole Is Here
Do you ever get depressed and feel utterly hopeless? I do sometimes and when it feels overwhelming I feel blessed that I have good friends to help lift me up. And I am grateful for my gift in finding the perfect movie to re-energize my spirit and drive. Also, I am happy to be there for my friends when they are feeling down. I tell them the same things they tell me:
"You are not alone."
"Everything will be okay."
"This too will pass."
Henry Poole Is Here (2008)
The drama Henry Poole Is Here is about a dying man named Henry (Luke Wilson) who returns to his hometown and buys a house to await his end. His solitude is interrupted by his neighbor, Esperanza (Adriana Barraza), who insists she sees the face of Christ on the stucco wall of his house. Soon the whole neighborhood comes to see what they believe is a miracle. See: movie trailer
There are many comedic moments in what sounds like a dark story of depression. Henry slowly discovers that despite his desire to be left alone that he is surrounded by people who care about him and want to help cheer him up. Even the names of these caring people are meaningful like his neighbor "Dawn" and local supermarket cashier "Patience". Even the name Esperanza is Spanish for hope.
Movies can be a powerful source of inspiration when you feel depressed and hopeless. And if you remain open you will see that there is always someone near you that cares about you.
Remember…
"You are not alone."…
"Everything will be okay."…
"This too will pass."

Tip#593: Remember Your Indestructible Optimism, Part 1 - Argo
Do you know what it's like to be forced into a situation you don't want to be in? I definitely have and I've always overcome these challenges through the mindset of indestructible optimism. It's about not dwelling on your present situation but to focus on where you'd rather be. It's about believing in the future you want so much that it becomes your glowing light in the dark.
I remember how this positive mindset worked for me in June of 2010 when I, along with hundreds of innocent people, were held against our will by riot police during the G20 Summit here in Toronto. I was corralled, handcuffed and detained in freezing rain and later in an oxygen-deprived bus for hours. And yet from the start I never focused on the overwhelming experience unfolding in front of me. I BELIEVED I would be okay. I FOCUSED on the idea that I would be fine. And I'm happy to say I was right! (See 12 part blog series documenting my G20 Experience).
Argo (2012)
The thriller film Argo is based loosely on the true story of the rescue of six U.S. diplomats during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. They are led out by Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) with the daring concept of using cover identities as location scouts for a Canadian film production titled Argo. What unfolds is a dramatic, riveting story of people coming together and make something fake appear absolutely real in order to save lives.
Mendez begins the task of creating the fake movie by recruiting real Hollywood makeup artist John Chambers (John Goodman) and producer Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin). With humorous dialogue Siegel says, "If I'm doing a fake movie, it's gonna be a fake hit." Later Mendez trains all six diplomats to memorize every detail of their cover identities in order to make this near impossible concept to work. They had to fully believe in these new roles in order to be free.
Watching their situation brought back memories of what happened to me at the G20 Summit. And what excited me was the film's core process for overcoming their situation is what I used to stay positive and focused towards my freedom. Even Siegal believed that the movie was real enough that, in his own mind, would still be a hit! Mendez trained all the diplomats to truly BELIEVE in something that seemed ridiculous at first but was the key to their freedom. All they had to do was to stay focused and it led to fueling their indestructible optimism!
Remember that there is always a solution to any situation you feel forced into. Remember that the solutions always start with your mindset AND your ability to remain FOCUSED on a brighter future you want. Your indestructible optimism is already inside you. You can activate your optimistic mindset anytime and any place!

Tip#591: Just Have Fun, Part 2 – Iron Sky
I recently felt overloaded with all my goals for promoting my social media consulting services, eBooks, movie articles and speaker topics that I was, ironically, thankful for the Thanksgiving long weekend here in Canada. It gave me a chance to step outside my work mindset and see friends and family I have been missing. And I indulged in an overflow of delicious foods and wine with leftovers to enjoy for days to come!
What also helped was seeing movies just for the sake of having fun and being entertained. Films always help me escape any stress I experience and I found one that I've added to my "stress management" list of movie recommendations!
Iron Sky (2012)
The science fiction action comedy Iron Sky is about Nazi Germans who had fled to the moon and built a space fleet to return and conquer Earth in the year 2018. In the film you will notice that the President of the United States looks very much like Sarah Palin. Really, that’s all you need to know about this cheesy B-Movie style film! See: movie trailer
The difference in this B-Movie is that the special effects and spaceship designs are absolutely stunning. For example the Nazi spaceships are modeled after old Zeppelin airships and upgraded as massive space carriers for fighter ships. And the space battles are as epic as any other serious science fiction film. Did this film unleash my inner geek? YES! Will you enjoy this movie? YES and only if you intend to just have fun!
Stress Management Movie List
So start developing your "stress management" library of movies. Make a list of films that help entertain you and escape a heavy or foggy mindset for a few hours. It doesn't matter if your choices are comedies, action adventures, science fiction or romance. As long as you are having fun you'll be in the perfect head space!

Tip#590: Expand Your Mind with Time Travel Movies, Pt 1 – The Time Traveler’s Wife
Since seeing Looper, starring Bruce Willis (see tip#587), I have been watching other time travel movies where characters are able to help their younger selves in the past. Ironically, Willis, played another character, Russell, who talked to his 9 year old self (Spencer Breslin) in Disney's The Kid. And in helping him overcome a childhood pain AND recognizing this as the source of his adult issues, resulted in a ripple effect that changed Russell's present AND future for the better!
This concept has been intriguing me recently. It's one of the reasons time travel movies are one of my absolute favourite themes for movies! And there is one film that was shot in Toronto where characters are constantly time traveling and interacting with past selves AND the future selves of loved ones.
The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)
The romantic drama The Time Traveler’s Wife is about Henry (Eric Bana) who has a genetic disorder that causes him to time travel randomly and tries to have a romantic relationship with his love Clare (Rachel McAdams). The film opens with Henry at 6 years old having his first traumatic experience time traveling while in a car accident with his mother. Amazingly his future self (Bana) is there to comfort his younger self and explain what happened. See: movie trailer
If you haven’t seen this thought-provoking film then I will only say there is another character that does the same thing comforting a younger self. It boggled my mind witnessing these scenes and that's when I realized my mind and imagination were opening up to new forms of thinking. I believe these emotional, cinematic moments help expand our mindsets to look at our own lives from new perspectives.
Time travel movies can inspire you with "what if" stories of characters helping their past and future selves in a positive way. If you feel emotional witnessing these scenes then recognize this as a sign you are identifying with the possibilities of a better reality for you. Expand your mind today with the possibility of a brighter future for yourself!
