Tip#532: Personal Leadership, Part 2 – Schindler’s List

I recently facilitated a screening and discussion of Schindler's List on Good Friday for my client St. Andrew's United Church and I had a profound insight. For the first time I was able to see the movie hero, Oskar Schindler, as a master networker and entrepreneur. I recognized the core skill sets of a man who would later do something extraordinary and use his strengths to save over a thousand people during the Holocaust.

Part of the power of movies is that they can inspire and motivate you in different ways during different times of your life. When Schindler's List was first released in 1993 it helped educate me to the atrocities of the Holocaust. Because of the emotional intensities I could only watch it again in 2011. This time I was deeply inspired by the perseverance demonstrated by Schindler and the survivors. And in 2012 I was able to truly recognize the personal leadership of a man who chose to do great good with his skill sets.

Schindler's List 1993

Based on a true story, Steven Spielberg's movie Schindler's List is about Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) a German businessman who saved the lives of more than a thousand, mostly Polish Jewish, refugees during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. As the film begins you witness how Schindler was a master networker by making social connections very quickly with key Nazi officials at a restaurant. He then hires Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley) to be his accountant and liaison with the Jewish community to help build his business.

As the horrors of the Holocaust escalate Schindler begins to use his network to save as many Jews as he can. He even uses up all his accumulated wealth from his business to buy and protect as many Jews as he could. Though this film may be a challenge to watch, Oskar Schindler's leadership qualities can inspire your own personal leadership in your life, career or business.

Personal leadership is about crystallizing your thinking and taking charge of the direction and destination of your own life. Movie heroes can reflect your potential and inner strengths to be a leader in your own story. You already have certain gifts, skills, strengths and talents. Just chose to apply them onto the path you desire with confidence, courage and passion!
