Tip#512: Are You Adaptable to Change & Crisis? – Dolphin Tale

"The ultimate definition of success is you could loose everything that you have and truly be okay with it. Your happiness isn’t based on external factors."
Tony Hsieh, CEO, Zappos on 20/20

It is very synchronistic that I hear this quote as we enter the new year of 2012. I actually got chills up my spine when I heard Tony Hsieh say the quote above on his 20/20 interview with Barbara Walters. Having met Hsieh twice (see tip#213 and tip#376) it really felt like he was giving me a personal message when I saw his interview on Youtube.

Hsieh's statement was true for me. I lost a big chunk of my life and business in 2010 and I AM truly okay with it (see tip#400). I had learned how highly adaptable I could be. Along the way I discovered other remarkable people who inspired me like a blind boy who learned how to see through sound. Ben Underwood developed a form of sonar by making clicking sounds with his mouth and sensing the objects the vibrations bounce off of. See more: click here

Dolphin Tale 2011

The family film Dolphin Tale is inspired by the true story of Winter, a bottlenose dolphin, rescued off the Florida coast. Winter lost her tail and had to learn how to adapt to a prosthetic tail created by Dr. Cameron McCarthy (Morgan Freeman). Many people supported and cared for Winter including the boy who found her named Sawyer (Nathan Gamble) and Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick Jr.).

You see how challenging it is for Winter to continually try on prototypes of the prosthetic tail. There are times she seems to be in much pain and discomfort swimming with this foreign object attached to her body. But eventually she learns to adapt with the loving care of everyone wanting to help her survive. You then see how she inspires young children and war vets who have lost their own limbs to feel supported in their physical differences. See: movie trailer

2 Crucial Factors

I believe there are 2 crucial factors for successfully adapting to unexpected change and crisis:
1) Maintain a positive, optimistic mindset no matter what
2) Allow caring people to help

Focusing on the negatives eventually destroys your ability to overcome challenges. That's why looking forward to a brighter future paves the way for positive change. And having the courage to face your current situation will allow you to see that you already have people near eager to help you adapt. You have that courage in you right now. Believe you are adaptable to anything!

"Just because you’re hurt doesn't mean you’re broken."
