Tip#513: The Power in Silence - Drive

This whole month is feeling like I've been in hibernation. I've been learning to enjoy the down time and really go inward. I'm getting lots of rest and meditation. I stopped feeling guilty that I wasn't being more productive or proactive with my goals. I was enjoying the silence.

I once wrote a blog post called The Positive Pause (see tip#153) and I knew that was what I was in now. I knew it was a necessary time of reflection and was learning to trust that life was unfolding the way it was meant to flow now. This was a gift of time and all I had to do was embrace it with no regrets or doubt. There was power in the silence.

Drive 2011

The movie Drive is about a Hollywood stunt performer (Ryan Gosling) who moonlights as a getaway driver. His character is alluring because he doesn't say much and yet there is a calm confidence about him. There are many dialogue scenes that are riveting because of his silence. Often when he is asked a question he doesn’t even answer.

There is a meditative quality of this film that captures the Driver's life as a loner. You can feel the power of the silence. So when he needs to take action as a driver or in defending himself, the screen physically erupts with incredible energy, intensity and violence. That contrast with the silence is what grips you. See: movie trailer

Dramatic Pauses

Despite the Driver's violent side there is much to learn from his dramatic pauses. His silent moments are not filled with doubt or hesitation but with confidence, alertness and sensitivity.

If you are going through a hibernation or positive pause embrace this as a gift of time. Feel confident that this is a necessary time for rest, reflection or re-energizing. There is so much power in silence and in quiet moments. Discover this today.

Tip#512: Are You Adaptable to Change & Crisis? – Dolphin Tale

"The ultimate definition of success is you could loose everything that you have and truly be okay with it. Your happiness isn’t based on external factors."
Tony Hsieh, CEO, Zappos on 20/20

It is very synchronistic that I hear this quote as we enter the new year of 2012. I actually got chills up my spine when I heard Tony Hsieh say the quote above on his 20/20 interview with Barbara Walters. Having met Hsieh twice (see tip#213 and tip#376) it really felt like he was giving me a personal message when I saw his interview on Youtube.

Hsieh's statement was true for me. I lost a big chunk of my life and business in 2010 and I AM truly okay with it (see tip#400). I had learned how highly adaptable I could be. Along the way I discovered other remarkable people who inspired me like a blind boy who learned how to see through sound. Ben Underwood developed a form of sonar by making clicking sounds with his mouth and sensing the objects the vibrations bounce off of. See more: click here

Dolphin Tale 2011

The family film Dolphin Tale is inspired by the true story of Winter, a bottlenose dolphin, rescued off the Florida coast. Winter lost her tail and had to learn how to adapt to a prosthetic tail created by Dr. Cameron McCarthy (Morgan Freeman). Many people supported and cared for Winter including the boy who found her named Sawyer (Nathan Gamble) and Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick Jr.).

You see how challenging it is for Winter to continually try on prototypes of the prosthetic tail. There are times she seems to be in much pain and discomfort swimming with this foreign object attached to her body. But eventually she learns to adapt with the loving care of everyone wanting to help her survive. You then see how she inspires young children and war vets who have lost their own limbs to feel supported in their physical differences. See: movie trailer

2 Crucial Factors

I believe there are 2 crucial factors for successfully adapting to unexpected change and crisis:
1) Maintain a positive, optimistic mindset no matter what
2) Allow caring people to help

Focusing on the negatives eventually destroys your ability to overcome challenges. That's why looking forward to a brighter future paves the way for positive change. And having the courage to face your current situation will allow you to see that you already have people near eager to help you adapt. You have that courage in you right now. Believe you are adaptable to anything!

"Just because you’re hurt doesn't mean you’re broken."
Dolphin Tale (2011)

Tip#511: What is Your Destination in Life? - The Adventures of Tintin

When you feel depressed or lost it's because you've lost sight of your dream, your destination in life. This was an epiphany I learned months ago and knew this to be true for myself recently. As mentioned in previous blog post #510 I was feeling very unfocused and unenergized. This lasted for almost 2 weeks and I knew somehow I lost sight of my big dream in life, my destination.

So by using the natural rhythm of wintertime I hibernated. I did a lot of resting and, of course, watch many movies. I also did a lot of meditating and praying. Eventually answers started to percolate up to my awareness. I needed to remember what my big dream was. And it probably isn't what I thought it was over the past year or else I wouldn't be feeling lost now.

The Adventures of Tintin 2011

The animated, performance capture movie The Adventures of Tintin is based on a series of popular comic books by Belgian artist Hergé. It is also director Steven Spielberg's first animated feature. The story is about a young reporter named Tintin (Jamie Bell) and Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) setting off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship originally commanded by Haddock's ancestor.

The colourful realism of the characters and settings are dazzling such as Tintin's life-like hair blowing lightly in the wind. There are also astounding and elaborate action sequences like the chase scene in Bagghar (a fictional port city in Morocco). And this exciting adventure all started when Tintin became passionate about a discovery he made when he bought a model of a sailing ship. This discovery became Tintin's mystery to solve, his goal to achieve and his destination.

See: movie trailer

I was inspired to see this as a mirror for myself and for rediscovering my big dream, my goal in life. I believe it will automatically focus and cement my destination. It will become my true north and I will never be lost again.

If you are feeling down and lost perhaps you have forgotten your destination in life or not following your dream. Take time for yourself and go inward for answers. Quiet your mind of external distractions and then listen to your inner voice. Your big dream and destination is inside you somewhere.

Tip#510: Get Motivated by Movie Quotes - We Bought A Zoo

I was actually in an airplane flying home when I rang in the New Year. It was very surreal since mostly everyone was asleep. And when I returned home from my Las Vegas vacation I was very jet lagged and feeling very unfocused. I had new life challenges that came up over the holidays and I had no clear solutions. So I did what always helped energize my positivity and treated myself to something that made me feel good. I went to see a movie!

My first movie of 2012 was Cameron Crowe's first movie in 6 years, We Bought A Zoo. Ever since I saw the trailer months ago I was hooked. The story looked so bright and optimistic! And since Crowe's Jerry Maguire is one of my top favourite movies I knew the story would be uplifting and full of motivating quotes...

"Sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it."

"The secret to talking is listening."

"You do something for the right reasons, nothing can stop you."

We Bought A Zoo 2011

The comedy-drama We Bought a Zoo is based on a true story about Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon) and his two kids buying and living in a country zoo. The story has many themes such as persevering with a goal, leadership, teamwork, courage, caring for animals, dealing with the death of a loved one, finding new love AND seeing life as an adventure. See: movie trailer

I enjoyed this movie so much I saw it again a few days later. On many levels my soul just needed to hear all the encouraging messages so I could persevere with my own goals and find solutions to my problems. Hearing and reading motivational quotes always helps improve my attitude and be more positive when dealing with unexpected challenges.

Find quotes to lift you up in difficult times. Find quotes from famous, successful people you admire to guide you through challenges. Watch movies (especially favourite ones) with new ears and when you hear a quote that moves you remember it or write it down. That message could have been created just for you when you needed it most!

Tip#509: A New Year’s Message from the Movies – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

"For what it's worth: it's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again."

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2008

I saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button again recently on my last night of my Las Vegas Christmas vacation. The mesmerizing story, characters, performances and music stirred my soul even more than the first time I saw it in Vegas at Christmas time 3 years ago. And it filled me with uplifting messages for the New Year like the quote above.

If you are struggling in life, feeling lost or going through difficult times I hope this movie quote re-ignites your passion, perseverance AND enthusiasm for an exciting 2012. The magic of movies will always be there to lift you up.

Happy New Year to you!
