Tip#1086: Believe in Magic, Part 4 - Being There

Ever since Valentine’s Day of 2018 a series of magical moments occurred. It started at a fun Valentine’s Day dinner a friend hosted where she did unique oracle style readings for everyone. She would ask each person to open any page of a book and whatever you read was your fortune.

I actually resonated with the host’s own oracle reading and trusted my gut that this insight was also for me on how to get business/money flowing. The message I received was…

“I’m now available to receive anyone who can benefit from my teachings and skills. Let all who need me find me. Let me help relieve suffering. The Divine is my complete Source for all prosperity and It will provide.”

Since this special day this statement has been an affirmation and mantra. Four days later I got a fortune cookie that said "YOU WILL HAVE AN EXCITING BUSINESS ADVENTURE”. I was surprised at how specific this fortune was! The very next day I received an email inquiry for a motivational speaker job in an old restored Scottish castle & Luxury Inn in Port Dover! They even offered me to stay for a mini vacation and host a movie night!

The “business adventure” prediction didn’t end there because just a few days ago I was at a special foodie event and won the draw prize of a trip for two to Fort Lauderdale! I was surprised and thrilled and yet not really surprised by all these magical happenings. I think its because I’ve kept my child-like belief in magic into my adult life. And I believe childhood magic can make anything seem possible and wondrous!

Being There (1979)

The comedy, drama film, Being There, is about a simple, sheltered gardener named Chauncey Gardiner (Peter Seller) who becomes a surprisingly trusted advisor to powerful businessman Ben Rand (Melvyn Douglas) and to the US President (Jack Warden). He also becomes a close friend to Ben’s wife Eve Rand (Shirley MacLaine). This highly entertaining movie is filled with many memorable moments with humorous and touching performances. See: movie trailer

This film gets better and better everytime I see it! It really celebrates the magic of child-like magic and how it can transform the negativity of adulthood and even the pain of politics. Chauncey indirectly delivers many life lessons whenever he speaks and inspires with his indestructible optimism and ability to truly live in the moment. His child-like positivity is so contagious that the US President, the press and anyone that meets Chauncey is transformed in some wonderful, uplifted way.

Whenever you feel stuck in life or at work do your best to believe in magic and that solutions are possible and just around the corner. Believe that your happy inner child is alive and well and then you'll soon see life get filled with warm sunshine and hope again!

Tip#1085: You Can Rewrite Your Life, Part 7 - Annihilation

There was a huge message I resonated with after seeing Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the second time. The message was spoken by the villain Kylo Renn who says…

“Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to. That's the only way to become what you are meant to be.”

The filmmakers also took this radical, controversial approach by killing off the beloved history and heroes of the original Star Wars trilogy whether fans wanted it or not. For me it was mirroring what I needed to hear in order to continue my exploration and therapies for healing my wounded inner child. I know a part of me needs to die in order to become the man and adult I’ve wanted to become.

Rewriting, rebooting or reprogramming my life has been a long journey for transforming destructive subconscious thoughts. My daily exercises I’ve been documenting on this blog about inner child healing are taking me deeper into myself more than ever before (see tip#1084). And thankfully the perfect movies continue to fall right into my lap to confirm my path and thrust me even deeper!

Annihilation (2018)

The science fiction horror film, Annihilation, is about cellular biology professor and former U.S. Army soldier Lena (Natalie Portman) and a group of military scientists who enter "The Shimmer", a mysterious quarantined zone full of mutating landscapes and creatures. This riveting, thought-provoking movie is filled with amazing sequences, dazzling visual effects and creepy, chilling moments. See: movie trailer

This is one of those films that noodles its way into your brain and make you think and question what you just watched. It will get you thinking about deep, profound changes that can happen at a cellular level. I recommend you see this movie without knowing anymore details (or seeing the trailer) so you can enjoy the mystery unfold for yourself.

For me the theme of destruction in order for new growth touched me deeply and reaffirmed my current goals of breaking down and reconstructing my core beliefs affecting my wounded inner child. The film was an excellent metaphor for mirroring the benefits of radical change in order to live a better life.

I’ve had to learn this lesson the hard way since losing my home and business several years ago in 2010 (see tip#400). And yet it was the best thing that happened to me because the destruction of my old life led me to the discovery of the clinical depression and seasonal affective disorder that plagued me. And it helps me now to go deeper within myself and heal on a cellular level.

Sometimes in order to move forward in life is to collapse everything we think we know to be true. It means having to truly let go of the past in order to rebuild a solid new foundation for a brighter future. Let movies remind you, inspire you and provide you with insights, answers and entertainment along the way!

“It’s not destroying. It’s creating something new.”

Tip#1084: Connecting with Your Inner Child, Part 7 - Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

For the past several days I’ve loved watching my favourite part of the recent 90th Academy Awards show over and over again! The video clip featured host Jimmy Kimmel leading Hollywood stars like Gal Gadot, Mark Hamill and Margot Robbie walk into the theatre across the street and surprise the moviegoers. These stars were like excited, giddy kids while the audience members erupted into ecstatic joy at their presence!

This Oscar moment really touched my “happy inner child” and wished I was in that audience. While at the same time I had been experiencing revelations about my “wounded inner child” thanks to the fantastic audiobook, Reconciliation: Healing the Inner Child by Thich Nhat Hanh. The avalanche of insights I’ve been receiving from these Buddhist practices mirror what I’ve been learning about “reparenting” psychotherapy. These practices say that in order to break free of chronic blocks in life you need to reconnect and rescue your inner wounded 5 to 7-year-old. See previous tip#1083

One of my early motivational speaker topics was called Peeling Your Inner Onion and it was about finding the courage to go back in time, peel away the layers and find the original causes to reoccurring problems in life. And ever since I committed myself to this task it’s been a long journey of peeling my inner onion, crying along the way, and getting closer to the root of my challenges. Thankfully I always have the perfect movies that show up to encourage me and light my path!

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

The adventure, comedy, fantasy, film, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, is about four teenagers who are sucked into a magical video game and the only way to escape is to face their individual fears and work together to finish the game. This highly entertaining movie is a perfect balance of action, humour and life lessons with clever scenarios for each of the characters to face sides of themselves that cause anxiety and low self-esteem. See: movie trailer

I was so surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie! The performances of the actors playing the four game avatars of the teenagers, Dwayne Johnson/Alex Wolff, Kevin Hart/Ser'Darius Blain, Karen Gillian/Morgan Turner and Jack Black/ Madison Iseman were often mesmerizing because they were the same four teenagers but in different bodies/avatars. And you get to see how each avatar rescues their wounded inner child and each other.

The personal growth messages and life lessons were both fun to watch but also heartwarming and insightful. They were inspiring and motivational because they made me think about areas I’m stuck in my life and felt encouraged that I could rewrite these fears with courage and confidence. I highly recommend you see this because one of the characters may be an ideal cinematic role model for you.

Inspiring Themes:
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Indestructible Optimism
• Courage
• Confidence
• Self-Worth & Self-Esteem
• Leadership
• Teamwork
• Supportive Relationships
• Strategic Thinking
• Facing Fears

Facing your fears may not be your first choice for dealing with life problems. But one day you may realize this fear originated in your childhood and the only way to break free is to face your fears and rescue your wounded inner child. Just remember you are never alone. You will find the resources and people you need. And you will always find the perfect films to mirror your inner strengths to persevere!

Tip#1083: Connecting with Your Inner Child, Part 6 – I, Tonya

I recently had a profound, re-vitalizing meeting with an old high school friend that rattled my cage, but in a good way! We talked about healing a wounded inner child in order to move forward in life if we felt stuck like in a Groundhog Day loop. She referred to “reparenting” as the key to breaking free. Reparenting is a form of psychotherapy in which the therapist actively assumes the role of a new or surrogate parental figure for the client. This is to treat psychological disturbances caused by defective or abusive parenting.

What resonated deeply from our conversation was the following:

Anxiety = inner child
Depression = inner child
Subconscious blocks = inner child
Fears = inner child
Ego = inner child

Something deep inside me clicked with these revelations. And perhaps this was also my inner child signaling that I’ve been on the right track for weeks now (see tip#1082). I felt re-energized, focused and excited to now make it a priority to rescue my wounded inner child. My friend suggested many starting points, one of which included reviewing photos of myself as a child around age 6 and 7. This is highly synchronistic because I already spent weeks doing this while re-organizing my dad’s vast photo archives during the Christmas holidays (see tip#1075).

The photo idea is also mentioned in this fantastic article I found online by Psychotherapist and Author Maxine Harley. I highly recommend you check out this straightforward overview on reparenting if you resonate with this as a solution for yourself. Read: How To Heal And Re-parent Your Inner Child

On this current self-discovery journey I am reminded that movies have already been teaching me the consequences of a wounded child sabotaging one’s adult life. The classic film Citizen Kane is a brilliant cinematic example which I highly recommend you see (see tip#906). And I recently discovered a new film that reinforces these consequences like a sledgehammer!

I, Tonya (2017)

The biographical, dark comedy, mockumentary-style drama film, I, Tonya, follows the life of figure skater Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie) and her connection to the 1994 attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan. This movie is filled with intense performances, hilarious moments and many stunning ice-skating re-creations. See: movie trailer

This film reveals the physical, mental and emotional abuse that Harding endured growing up as a child at the hands of her mother LaVona (Allison Janney). You then see how this pattern of abuse repeats with her abusive husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan) and then in her career. And inbetween you see her persevere and become the first American female figure skater to complete two triple axel jumps in competition.

Like the movie Citizen Kane, this film illustrates the tragic consequences of not acknowledging and healing a wounded inner child. This is why I highly recommend seeing these movies to inspire and motivate you to examine reparenting as a possible solution to freeing yourself from the chronic challenges that keep repeating in your life or career.

Movies can be a powerful and emotional mirror for the positives and negatives that have happened, are happening or could happen in your life. Let these cinematic role models, with both their flaws and talents, show you the way out of your darkness. Who knows, perhaps your inner child was the one that led you to see these movies in the first place!
