I just discovered four inspiring stories that I am so excited to share! While on vacation in Las Vegas for the holidays I saw a new TV show called Caught on Camera with Nick Cannon where at the end three amazing videos were shown that touched my heart…
Sam Gordon, is a talented 9 year old girl who excels at playing football in a boy’s league. She soon became the first female football player to be featured on a Wheaties cereal box. See video
Heather Dorniden is a runner leading the pack during the final heat of a 600-meter race when she trips and lands hard on her face. She amazed everyone by continuing the race and winning! See video
Jason McElwain is a high-functioning autistic teen who got a special chance to play the last four minutes in a high school game. He stunned the cheering crowd by scoring 20 points with four amazing shots. See video
The fourth story was inspired by a true story and comes from an Oscar-winning short film called Star in the Night that I discovered on Christmas Eve while watching the Christmas in Connecticut DVD. It was in the Special Features section and was such a surprising hidden gem of a movie that I wanted the whole world to know about it!
Star in the Night (1945)
The short drama film, Star in the Night, is a modern day retelling of the Nativity story, set on Christmas Eve at a desert motel in the Southwestern United States. It shows how a bitter motel owner named Nick Catapoli (J. Carrol Naish) is transformed by witnessing the unexpected goodness in the people around him. The film is 22 minutes long and can be seen online on YouTube. I highly recommend you see this heartwarming film. It will now be a holiday tradition to watch with my friends and family! Tip#814: Indulge Once A Year, Part 2 – Just Friends
I am blissfully soaking up the hot sunshine on this year’s Las Vegas holiday vacation and feeling so damn good! Within two days of arriving my seasonal affective disorder (SAD) symptoms dissipated. I’ve been spending quality time in the sunlight and eating more fresh fruits like delicious, juicy persimmons and mandarins from California. This doesn’t mean I’m not indulging in tasty, greasy comfort foods here in Vegas! Because I am!
New favourites include fantastic fish tacos at Rubio’s and more seafood at the Crab Corner where I indulged in mouthwatering catfish, shrimps, soft shell crabs and onion rings all in a crispy batter. Next to us were three people with a table full of hard-shell blue crabs they were gorging on! All this indulgence reminded me of a recent comedy I saw for first time that was overflowing with craziness!
Just Friends (2005)
The romantic comedy, Just Friends, is about a successful record executive named Chris Brander (Ryan Reynolds) and was once an obese, high school nerd who gets a second chance with his lifelong romantic crush Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart) at Christmas time. This hilarious film features crazy, screwball performances especially from Anna Faris who plays hyperactive recording artist Samantha James. See: movie trailer
I almost felt guilty laughing as much as I did because so many scenes were just so silly. I especially laughed at the end credit scene of Reynold’s character in a fat suit lip synching the ballad “I Swear” into a mirror with all his heart and soul! See: movie clip
So whether you are indulging in delicious foods you love that may not be great for you just enjoy it especially if it’s just once a year during this holiday time! And if you indulge in guilty pleasures like comedies that make you laugh then enjoy your holiday favourites to the fullest. Wishing you all HAPPY HOLIDAYS and lots of uplifting movie watching!

Tip#813: Resilience Resources, Part 6 - 50 First Dates
Today is the 14th anniversary of my Dad’s unexpected passing and he’s been on my mind more than usual. I’ve even been finding more shiny dimes which is always a divine message his spirit is watching over me (see: tip#145, tip#313, tip#638, tip#665, tip#740).
Last night I felt compelled to watch 50 First Dates again mainly because the humour and sunny Hawaiian locations would lift me up from my winter blues (SAD) symptoms. At the end credits I got a chill up my spine because there was a dedication to Adam Sandler’s dad who passed away at the time…
“This Movie is dedicated to Stanley Sandler. My father, my mentor, my teacher, my coach, my idol, my hero, my family's leader, my mom's best friend, and by far the coolest guy I will have ever known. We will miss you every day, but we will always try to make you proud.”
Coincidence? Synchronicity? It doesn’t matter to me because I just saw this as a message that my dad guided me to see this film and a comforting reminder he is here with me.
50 First Dates (2004)
The romantic comedy film, 50 First Dates, is about a veterinarian named Henry (Adam Sandler) working in Hawaii and falls in love with Lucy (Drew Barrymore) who has a short-term memory impairment. Lucy is unable to remember events of the previous day when she wakes up the next morning which prompts Henry to become creative in finding ways to reconnect. See: movie trailer
I’ve seen this film many times and it just gets better and better with its fantastic soundtrack and emotional scenes mix in with hilarious moments. This time I recognized the parallels of Henry’s daily creativity to help cope with his challenge with my own creative methods for dealing with depression (see: tip#805). I was also inspired by Henry’s indestructible optimism and perseverance. Lucy’s father’s dedication to help her daughter cope was also touching to see. It reminded me that even if my dad isn’t here in the physical that I still feel his love and support.
Favourite movies like this can be a never-ending resource for inspiration and uplifting entertainment. They can also be heartfelt reminders of the support you can receive and give to someone facing difficult situations. Watch a favourite film right now to lift you up!

Tip#812: Resilience Resources, Part 5 – Mental Health - Mumford
Despite the elevated symptoms and discomfort this winter of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) I am focusing on this time as an adventure in connecting with mental health organizations, professionals and experts worldwide. My vision is to share my movie tips as powerful Resilience Resources that could help others. I’ve been using my social media channels like twitter and achieved fantastic results!
I have discovered over 30 mental health related twitter accounts in Canada, US and the UK.. Several have favorited my tweets or messaged me such the Mood Disorders Society of Canada and Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal, author of Winter Blues (see tip#804). It was exciting to hear from Dr. Rosenthal who tweeted “You have some great movies in there, thank you for sharing” in response to seeing my Top 15 Movies for Dealing with Depression & SAD (see tip#811)
Another exciting connection I made was with Anthony Tobia, associate professor of psychiatry at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, US. There Tobia created an innovative course called “Film Depictions to Learn Mental Disease” where students tweet their insights while watching films like Forrest Gump and Silver Linings Playbook.
Discovering Tobia’s work thrilled me because it demonstrates a need to learn more about mental health and that films and social media are being used as powerful learning tools. And it just sounds like a lot of fun too! Read more: click here
Mumford (1999)
The romantic comedy-drama film, Mumford, is set in a small, picturesque town where residents are receiving highly effective, offbeat advice from new psychologist Dr. Mumford (Loren Dean). Each case is fascinating and entertainingly quirky with great performances by Dean and Hope Davis, Jason Lee, Mary McDonnell, Alfre Woodard, David Paymer, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Martin Short and Zooey Deschanel in her first film role. I really enjoyed this hidden gem of a movie which The New York Times referred to as a “Frank Capra-Style Social Fable”. Dr. Mumford was inspiring because he had a natural talent for listening and that simple gift allowed him to help his clients reveal their secret lives and overcome their challenges quickly. As a result they are quick to support him when his own personal secret is revealed. You will wish you had someone to talk to like Dr. Mumford!
This film is a highly recommended Resilience Resource for entertainment purposes as well as gaining insights on the importance of finding supportive people or counselors for mental health. It also could inspire you to be a good listener for someone else!

The Christmas holidays may not be a happy time for some people. In 2000 my loving father unexpectedly passed away just before Christmas and I never got a chance to say goodbye. And now that this is the first holiday season I am aware of my mental health concerning seasonal affective disorder, I have been researching all I can to manage the SAD & winter blues depression symptoms I feel. Thankfully movies have become more powerful than ever in fueling my perseverance and positivity to remain productive at work and enjoy life.
As I wrote in tip#801 movies are one of the best coping tools for dealing with depression according to depression author Therese J. Borchard. Films help relieve the brain of ruminating, self-defeating thoughts during depression, winter blues or SAD. The following 15 movies are favourites that have helped my mental health with these key themes:
• Excellent cinematic role models for resilience & perseverance
• Reminders for focusing on a vision or goal
• Training the mind for indestructible optimism in workplace & life
• Reminders there are always supportive people
• Movies alleviate ruminating & self-defeating loop in the brain
A Beautiful Mind (2001)

It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2010)

Life of Pi (2012)

Peaceful Warrior (2006)

Tip#810: Resilience Resources, Part 3 – Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - A League of Their Own
Synchronicities always blow my mind when they happen and are usually a sign I am on the right track with something important. As I continue to persevere this winter with high symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) I discovered that comedian, actress, author and television personality Rosie O’Donnell has spoken out about her SAD. This inspired me to continue to be open with my SAD and also made me want to see her film A League of Their Own again.
That same evening I was at a friend’s home and suddenly I heard Tom Hanks and Geena Davis in the living room on their big flat screen TV. I was stunned that A League of Their Own was showing and I got chills up my spine! Also just hours before I wrote down this quote I found online…
"I too suffer from SAD: seasonal disorder... so if it's sunny in Miami, I instantly feel happy, and when it's gray and cloudy, I feel like I'm being tortured by someone."

So seeing this film again at this synchronistic time was a big reminder for me to stay resilient with my own challenges with SAD, be open about it like Rosie O’Donnell and that movies always have a magical, inspirational place in my life!
A League of Their Own (1992)
The comedy-drama film, A League of Their Own, is a fictional story about the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in 1943. Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and her sister Kit (Lori Petty) join the first woman’s baseball league calling themselves The Rockwell Peaches during World War II. This movie features hilarious performances by Tom Hanks, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna and Jon Lovitz. See: movie trailer
The story also shows the resilience woman had to endure during much discrimination against them for playing professional baseball. At first their games had very small turnouts and yet when they started to perform for the media they demonstrated their strengths as women AND as talented ball players. Their courage and perseverance helped changed history and society’s views on women as more than just housewives and mothers.
