“Just because you’re hurt doesn’t mean you’re broken.”
Dolphin Tale (2011)
Several months ago I experienced excruciating pain in my right elbow that was diagnosed as tennis elbow. I called it "computer elbow" because the pain was the result of decades worth of repetitive actions using a keyboard and mouse. I went to a physiotherapist for first time in my life and after 12 sessions and training myself to use my left hand with a mouse I am so grateful for having my arm back to normal.
Before I knew I had tennis elbow I was a little scared that the pain was part of getting old. I would open a jar or shake someone’s hand and it hurt like hell! The experience really helped me appreciate my healthy body more and also to recognize the consequences of working too much on the computer. Mostly I am thankful for the help I received to help me persevere back to my strong self!
Dolphin Tale (2011)
The family drama film, Dolphin Tale, is inspired by the true story of Winter, a dolphin rescued off the Florida coast. Sawyer Nelson (Nathan Gamble) feels isolated from his family when he rescues a beached dolphin that eventually loses its tail. He becomes passionate about helping Winter and asks a prosthetics expert, Dr. Cameron McCarthy (Morgan Freeman) to create a unique solution. See: movie trailer
This film is excellent in demonstrating how finding a passion can transform a person’s attitude from sad and withdrawn to visibly excited, enthusiastic and driven. The young movie hero also shows how perseverance in helping others solve a problem can attract the passion of the community and the media who want to help as well.
Inspiring Themes in the Film:
• Passion
• Perseverance
• People, Community, Team Spirit
• Creative Thinking/Promotion
• Optimism
• Vision
• Resilience
In the film they feature a webcam where you can see the real Winter (click here). There is also a sequel coming out soon featuring another rescued dolphin named Hope. See: movie trailer
Let this movie and true story inspire your own passion and perseverance in the challenges you face today!

Tip#751: The Joy of Helping Others - Clueless - Miss Match
I recently saw an online ad from Thailand that immediately touched my heart. It was like a mini movie about a man who simply helps a series of people every day with no expectations. The characters and story really expresses the joy of helping others. See ad: Unsung Hero
Around the same time my movie blogger pal Candice Frederick of Reel Talk featured Cher Horowitz from the film Clueless as one of her top 10 iconic movie characters. Her choice inspired me to re-watch Clueless and I rediscovered how fun and witty the film and characters were! Synchronistically it was also about the joys of helping others.
Clueless (1995)
The comedy film, Clueless, is loosely based on Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma and is about a good-natured but superficial girl named Cher (Alicia Silverstone) who transforms herself when she focused on helping others. She plays matchmaker for two of her teachers, gives a makeover to a new student and later captain’s her school’s disaster relief effort. Cher wanted to live a more purposeful life beyond her passion for fashion, shopping and being popular at school. See: movie trailer
This highly entertaining comedy is a witty, funny and insightful movie that made a lasting impression in pop culture with its many catch phrases and a playful, adorable performance by Silverstone. It is also filled with important life lessons such as finding fulfillment helping others in need.
Miss Match TV series (2003)
There is a short lived TV show called Miss Match that I loved because I always felt it was like a sequel to Clueless. It also starred Silverstone as Kate Fox an attorney lawyer working for her dad’s firm and is a matchmaker on the side. See the similarities? Silverstone’s character embodies the same heart and bubbly spirit as Cher from Clueless and has a passion for helping others.
The show is currently not available on DVD or Netflix so watch most of the episodes on Youtube. Unfortunately the quality of video is not great and some unaired episodes are hard to find online. Here are first 5 episodes of 18:
Miss Match: Episode 1
Miss Match: Episode 2
Miss Match: Episode 3
Miss Match: Episode 4
Miss Match: Episode 5 (unaired)
Miss Match: Full Episode listing
I’m a big fan of this show because of the characters, funny and insightful stories and Kate’s giving spirit. Clueless and Miss Match inspires me to continue to help people in my life and work as well as strangers whenever I can. It always feels so good! Hopefully you are inspired by movies and TV shows to also experience the joys of helping others!

Tip#750: Be Inspired by Amazing True Stories, Part 2 - Heaven is for Real
I recently saw a video clip from Britain’s Got Talent of a magician who absolutely blew my mind. Canadian, Darcy Oake did some jaw-dropping tricks and I was left stunned and thrilled. I’ve watched the clip several times and ultimately I was just inspired knowing there are fantastic, amazing things in life to see. See: Darcy Oake video clip
Movie trailers can also leave me in a state of awe like the one for Heaven is for Real released a few months ago. I got chills watching it and have seen many times in anticipation of the full film. See: movie trailer
Heaven is for Real (2014)
The Christian drama film, Heaven is for Real, is based on the true story and best-selling book of a 4 year old boy Colton (Connor Corum) who says he visited Heaven during an emergency surgery. His highly detailed stories of angels, meeting Jesus and other relatives shakes up the beliefs of the townspeople and his father Todd (Greg Kinnear) and mother Sonja (Kelly Reilly). The story also focuses on how Todd, a pastor, tries to make sense of his son’s profound and unexplainable near-death experience.
Though the first act is a little slow there are thought provoking details and images of heaven and the afterlife. There are also many inspirational themes including the power of faith in the unexplained, prayer and the strength of community. If you’ve lost a loved one, like I have, you will be moved by this movie.
Akiane Kramarik
In the film there was an unnamed young girl that prompted me to do research on her. She was prodigy Akiane Kramarik who, at the age of 8, painted a highly detailed image of Jesus from divine visions she experienced when she was 4. Her paintings are absolutely stunning! Akiane is featured in the film as another child corroborating Colton’s vision of Jesus.
See: Akiane’s paintings categorized under age they were created
See: Amazing time-lapse of Akiane painting age 13
See: Akiane interview
Movies and real-life stories can shake up your beliefs and how you see the world. Let these stories, no matter how unbelievable, inspire and excite you to the thrilling possibilities of life!

Tip#749: Resilience & Rebirth - Rush
This is Easter weekend and I just enjoyed a marathon screening of four movies at a friend’s home and on his amazing large 3D flat screen TV. Dining on classic burgers and fries and chocolate Easter eggs we watched films we each chose: Rush, We’re the Millers, Iron Man 3 and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
With the return of warm spring weather and it being Easter I like to celebrate the theme of rebirth and renewal in my life. And after seeing the four films, I recognized those themes within these diverse movies of dramas and comedies. It was the first time I saw Rush and was also surprised at the multitude of inspirational content it provided for resilience and renewal.
Rush (2013)
The biographical sports drama film, Rush, is based on a true story during the 1970’s about the rivalry between race car drivers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl). The movie also showcases two different approaches to finding success in life and career and the resilience it takes to bounce back from extreme adversities. See: movie trailer
This highly entertaining film is filled with exciting Formula 1 race car scenes and inspirational tips for winning and achieving goals. Lauda experiences a horrifying car accident burning his face and damaging his lungs. He then demonstrates great courage and inner strength to heal and return back to the profession he loves within 5 months. The pain you see him endure in the hospital is gut-wrenching and yet inspires everyone, including Hunt and the racing crowd, with his incredible resilience.
You’ll be inspired by Lauda and Hunt on several levels. See this film to empower your resilience at work and in life. And if you have experienced life-changing traumas be inspired to know that you can feel reborn to begin again.
“Watching you win those races while I was fighting for my life, you were equally responsible for getting me back in the car.”

Tip#748: Expand Your Mind with Science Fiction, Part 1 - After the Dark
I’ve loved science fiction movies and TV shows since I was a kid because they fire up my imagination! They’ve kept my mind wide open to concepts like quantum realities or alternate realities. This is the belief that every possible future we can imagine for ourselves already exist. All we have to do is maintain focus on the future reality we want and it will eventually manifest in the physical.
TV shows like the Star Trek series, Fringe or Lost and films like Inception, The Matrix and Contact all helped me expand my thinking and see new perspectives to challenges in life. Science fiction has helped me recognize alternate decisions and options I may never have seen before.
After the Dark (Formerly called The Philosophers) (2013)
The science fiction psychological thriller film, After the Dark, explores the thinking in choosing 10 out of 20 people to survive in an underground shelter for one year during a nuclear apocalypse. In a class of graduating seniors a philosophy teacher Mr. Zimit (James D’Arcy) conducts a thought experiment and assigns each student an occupation. Each person then votes on who is essential for rebooting the human race. I recommend you see this fascinating film without seeing the trailer or knowing anymore about the story.
This highly engaging and thought-provoking film will have you rethinking your initial perceptions of the values of people and their professions, skill sets and personal interests. The alternate scenarios within the movie will also inspire you to discover what is most important for a thriving, supportive community. This film is excellent for building teamwork and team spirit.
Let science fiction movies help expand your imagination and recognize alternate realities and options you can apply as solutions to your own work and life challenges.

Tip#747: Persistence in Chasing a Dream (or Dream Girl) - Waking
There have been many unexplained, strange and fantastic events that have happened in my life. For example I once experienced a series of lucid dreams where I would meet with a beautiful woman and she led me to a piano to show me specific chords to play. In the following days and weeks I would compose songs that became my debut music CD, Rain of Angels. See music video: 2012 song
I cannot read music and yet I composed songs like "2012", “Spiritual Chocolate” and “Rain of Angels Reprise” that ended up getting regular radio airplay on stations like Galaxie CBC radio. And for a few years I received $100's in airplay royalty cheques! I believe this dream woman was somehow real and helped me make a dream come true of sharing my music with the world. I remember the lucid dreams being extremely vivid and hope to find a definitive answer to who this dream girl was AND if I’ll ever meet her.
Waking (2013)
The romantic comedy fantasy, Waking, is about newly engaged Ben (Skyler Caleb) who begins to have a series of vivid dreams with the beautiful Nadia (Meg Cionni). When Ben realizes she is a real person (whom he met once) and interacts with in dream state it turns his relationships upside down with his fiancé, boss and friends. Believing this dream girl is his soulmate he does everything he can to find her. See: movie trailer
This funny and witty film also has lessons in persistence, perseverance and tenacity for achieving seemingly impossible goals. Ben’s passion is so strong he finds the courage to follow his heart despite the adversities and people that did not support him.
When I saw this film I got chills up my spine because of the parallels of Ben’s dream girl experiences and my own. I was so grateful for this magical movie that I contacted the writer/star Skyler Caleb via Facebook to thank him. I told him my own lucid dream story and he responded that he has heard from multiple people who have similar stories.
Waking is an original romantic comedy fantasy that inspired me to believe that I could someday meet my dream girl too! Be entertained and inspired to persist with your own dreams and goals. You can see the film online now: Official Waking website

Tip#746: Moving Forward with Help of Community - We Are Marshall
After a recent presentation I gave at an event hosted by the Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies I was approached by a woman from the audience thanking me for sharing details of my year long depression back in 2000. She told me that she was just coming out of a similar situation and she expressed deep comfort knowing she was not alone in her struggles.
I made another deep connection with another audience attendee who shared that he too went through a painful bankruptcy after learning of my financial challenges. We were able to laugh about our experiences now and we felt a sense of supportive community with one another. The event was called “Moving Forward” and it mirrored what these two audience members were doing after the adversities they went through. See: event photos
I believe that moving forward from any crisis is much easier with the help of loving, understanding people. This event featured other presenters that included event coordinator Dr. Samita Nandy, Director at the Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies. She did a unique presentation that included a dance performance telling the story of the joys and pains of her life. She demonstrated her method for moving forward from personal crisis and, at the same time, inspired the audience that became a beautiful, supportive community for the evening.
We Are Marshall (2006)
The drama film, We Are Marshall, is based on a true story about the aftermath of the 1970 plane crash that killed 37 University football players and dozens of others including coaches, trainers, boosters and the plane crew. The story shows how an entire town deals with this horrific loss and how key people helped rebuild the football program to help heal the community. These brave, resilient people included head coach Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey), assistant coach William “Red” Dawson (Matthew Fox), university president Donald Dedmon (David Strathairn) and football player Nate Ruffin (Anthony Mackie).
This film is filled with deeply felt performances and many inspiring moments. One of the most powerful scenes I’ve ever seen that demonstrated the strength of community comes when the school committee is about to cancel the football program and look out a window to see 100’s of students chanting the school cheer “We are Marshall”. See this scene: movieclips.com
This movie will help you see that supportive and loving people can help you move forward from traumatic experiences. They will help you feel like you are not alone in your pain. Most of all they can fill you with hope so you can persevere out of your darkness and back into the light.

Tip#745: Feel Like a Superhero, Part 2 - Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Inspiring movies always make me feel like a superhero as do other people who share their knowledge on reminding me of my innate abilities for achieving success. Brian Tracy is a bestselling Author, Chairman and CEO of over 30 years whom I had the honor of meeting at a sales seminar a few years ago. I recently began listening to excerpts from his audio books about what he calls the super conscious mind. He says that geniuses like Mozart has accessed this ability and so can anyone else.
Listen: How to Activate Your Super Conscious Mind! Part 1
Listen: How to Activate Your Super Conscious Mind! Part 2
These two audio clips encapsulated what I’ve been learning over the years from other authors and speakers like Bob Proctor, Napoleon Hill, John Assaraf, Abraham-Hicks, Marianne Williamson, Wayne Dyer and so many more. They all teach that your thoughts, positive or negative, are what creates your reality. They’ve all been helping me re-activate my super conscious mind to achieve my dreams and goals. And movies, especially superhero films, amplifies the excitement of my potential!
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
The superhero action film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, continues the story of Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) as he continues to acclimate to modern society and continue working with the espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D.. Rogers soon discovers that this agency has been corrupted and must solve this mystery with the help of fellow Avenger, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). What follows is an epic, action packed superhero film filled with fantastic performances and special effects combined with a political thriller story. See: movie trailer
This highly entertaining film also shows Rogers as a true hero who stands for truth, justice and simply doing what is right. The movie relates back to scenes from the first Captain America film where he was still a scrawny, physically weak man. But we are reminded that he was chosen for his “super-soldier” transformation for the strength of his mind, values, courage and heart. It was and will always be those inner strengths that are the core of Rogers as a superhero.
Let Rogers/Captain America inspire your own inner strengths. Find resources like movies and authors who will help you feel like a superhero and be empowered to focus your thoughts for achieving your dreams and goals.

Tip#744: Have a Vision, Part 1 - Noah
Toronto has a beautiful city hall building that, when completed in the mid 60’s, people felt it was extremely futuristic, too futuristic for the city. Some people didn’t like this vision of architecture. But now the building is an important icon for the city.
There are also people with strong visions throughout history that were controversial at the time but now accepted like William Wilberforce who had a vision to abolish the slave trade in the late 1700’s as seen in the film Amazing Grace (see tip#741). See this great list: People who made a difference throughout history
And then there are film-makers who are making films that rewrite iconic stories and characters that cause controversy such as the Star Trek reboot films or the latest Superman movie, Man of Steel. For me these two examples are filled with many pros and cons. And now there is a rewrite of a famous biblical story with such a huge alternate vision that you really have to see it to shake up your own thoughts of Noah’s Ark.
Noah (2014)
The fantasy action drama film, Noah, is a retelling of the biblical tale of Noah’s Ark on an epic, magical and unexpected level. Writer and director Darren Aronofsky shares his vision of Noah and the building of the ark that is completely different from what you grew up with. Noah (Russell Crowe) is like an action hero tasked by God with a vision to build the ark with the help from his family and giant beings made of rock called The Watchers. The visuals are absolutely stunning and truly on a grand biblical scale especially when you see the multitude of animals and creatures board the ark. See: movie trailer
The film has received mixed reviews and banned in several countries and yet, according to Wikipedia, has received Christian and Jewish appraisal. I recommend seeing this film without any expectations except to experience a highly imaginative vision of an epic fantasy adventure like the Lord of the Rings films. In the end, the story is about the love of family and what it means to be a good person. It is also about what it means to have a vision you believe in deeply.
Let me know what you thought of this film. Did you like the vision of this biblical story?
