I woke up early this morning with brilliant sunshine pouring through my new bedroom windows. Felt sooooo good. I then walked out into the crisp lakeshore air and got some oven fresh butter croissants across the street. In the store the radio was playing Shania Twain’s “Today is Your Day” and my heart smiled because I could already feel it! Listen here
Check out the opening lyrics. They were so uplifting and also seemed to address the intense journey to get to this wonderful new home! Perhaps the lyrics also reflect something meaningful for you right now.
You got what it takes you can win,
Today is your day to begin.
Don't give up here, don't you quit.
The moment is now, this is it
Know that you can then you will
Get to the top of the hill
Part of the fun is the climb
You just gotta make up your mind
That today is your day
And nothing can stand in your way
Today is your day
Everything's goin' your way
Yes Man (2008)
The romantic comedy, Yes Man, is about Carl (Jim Carrey) who challenges himself to say “yes” to everything asked or offered to him for an entire year. The film is loosely based on true events of the book of the same name by Danny Wallace. At first, hilarious events result of saying yes to everything such as email and internet solicitations (mail order brides!), beggars on the street and invitations to anything! What is inspiring is that some situations he says yes to early on end up becoming very positive and useful later in his life and relationships. See: movie trailer
I wanted to feature this film mainly because I always loved the movie poster. It was both silly and representative of the bliss I feel when everything is just going so right in my life! Film posters can be empowering images to look at. See Tip#362: How Movie Posters Motivate – 4 Movie Examples

Tip#668: Cultivate Community, Part 5 – Be Kind Rewind
I am really enjoying my new home on the Toronto lakeshore! After an intense time searching for this space (see tip#655) I’ve been able to relax and enjoy the tranquility of a peaceful bedroom and living space. Also I’ve been enjoying rollerblading along the lakeshore paths and the many facilities here like swimming in the heavenly pool! I’m also meeting new people everyday living in this condo community. See: video of my glorious balcony view
There are many people to thank because I wouldn’t be here if not for the help of the many communities I reached out to. Community and word-of-mouth were the keys to my success. Here are the groups that helped me…
1. Mastery of Self-Expression Community
This was the personal development workshop that I’ve blogged about (see tip#538) that helped me after my bankruptcy hit. After hearing about my needs several members immediately offered their homes in case I didn’t find one by my deadline. Just receiving the offers filled me with hope.
2. Swapsity.ca Community
This is a barter website where it’s founder encouraged me to share my need on their community blog and it immediately generated apartment leads and encouraging messages from its members. I was also able to pass on the leads to others seeking apartments. (See tip#656)
3. Gift Circle Community
This new meetup.com group is just magical and powerful and is all about sharing a need and quickly finding someone who will provide it as a gift. When I shared my need for a new apartment I received an offer for temporary space in someone’s home and got a shared apartment lead.
4. Facebook Community
When Swapsity.ca posted my blog article for a new apartment several people on Facebook reposted it on their walls for their own group of friends to see. I also received direct Facebook messages of heartfelt thanks for inspiring them with my story of staying positive in the face of adversities.
5. Friends, Family, Colleagues Community
In the end I found my new home through a friend who owned a condo and had an extra room. She had been following my apartment search and called to offer the space. Deep down I feel that this gift of a home came because I followed my intuition to reach out to new communities. I learned so much about how helpful strangers can be and now I can share this to inspire others like you!
Be Kind Rewind (2008)
The comedy, Be Kind Rewind, is about how videos in a VHS rental store all get erased and it is up to employee Mike (Mos Def) and friend Jerry (Jack Black) to re-film the movies. The films they redo include Ghostbusters, Robocop, Driving Miss Daisy and many more. They then attract a massive following because of the crude, imaginative style of film-making they called “sweded”. See: movie trailer
Soon the neighborhood residents all get involved in the filmmaking process elevating the sense of community. They then rally together to create an original movie to raise money to save the building the rental store is in that is scheduled to be demolished. The film is a heartwarming story of how people come together through a common passion and help each other achieve a common goal.
What movies demonstrate a strong sense of community for you? Let me know and I will share your movie recommendations that could inspire others!

Tip#667: See Life As An Adventure, Part 2 – 4 Movie Tips
Have you ever had an epiphany when someone just shared a story? Have you ever resonated deeply when someone said a phrase or keyword? I recently experienced a profound reaction to a story I shared at a new salon series hosted by Melanie Gorka and Claire Buré of Commons11. This thought-provoking series called Is Beautiful brought together a diverse audience to discuss the theme of “Mindfulness” led by Ayla Newhouse a Communications/Wellness Designer.
At the conclusion we each shared a personal experience about what mindfulness meant to us. I talked about my recent month in May where I was dealing with multiple challenges while searching for a new home. Then on one specific day, while I was feeling so stressed and hopeless, a thought struck me that transformed my heaviness. I reminded myself that “I WAS ON AN ADVENTURE” and suddenly I felt better and actually excited about my situation! I just knew that everything would be okay and that I would find a home. And I did! (see tip#663)
What really moved me was my story triggered a deep resonance with other people at the salon. They said that when I mentioned the term “adventure” that it instantly helped them see their own challenges in a brighter light. It made me feel so good that my story inspired people. And it reminded me that this is what “indestructible optimism” is all about. Seeing life challenges as an adventure is a primary key to overcoming adversities.
Here are 4 movies that demonstrate seeing life challenges as an adventure:
The Croods (2013)
This animated comedy adventure is about a cave dwelling family that must learn to live out in the open after a catastrophe destroys their home. The father (Nicholas Cage) is a pessimist who learns to see life more optimistically through the help of a more evolved human (Ryan Reynolds). He sees life like an exciting adventure despite events that appear negative.
Empire of the Sun (1987)
This war epic is about a young English boy (Christian Bale) who is separated by his parents under the Japanese occupation of World War II. Despite the destruction and atrocities he witnesses his childlike sense of wonder helps him cope and survive. He saw everything as an exciting adventure and his positive attitude would inspire others.
Peaceful Warrior (2006)
This drama is about a college gymnast (Scott Mechlowicz) who dreams of Olympic success and is mentored by an enigmatic gas station attendant (Nick Nolte). The gymnast goes through a profound transformation in attitude and heart and realizes the ultimate answer he’d been seeking, “The journey is what brings us happiness not the destination.”
The Terminal (2004)
This comedy drama is about an eastern immigrant (Tom Hanks) who finds himself stranded in JFK airport and must learn how to survive and live there. Inspired by true events you will see how someone caught in an unusual situation chooses to view it as an adventure and an opportunity to make mutually supportive friends.
Do you see life as an adventure? What are some of your favourite movies that demonstrate the kind of adventures that excite you? Please share and know that your film recommendations could inspire someone!

Tip#666: Just Have Fun, Part 3 - This is the End
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am so grateful to each and every person that has supported me through thick and thin over the years. And it always seems to take a crisis to really show who your friends are (see tip#663). My recent challenges last month demonstrated this silver lining! And in return I am very happy to be there in their time of need.
And so for the past week I’ve been able to finally relax and settle into my new home (see tip#663) and enjoy some liberating rollerblading by the sunny lakeshore. I’ve also started to visit the amenities like the gym and the gloriously warm swimming pool! I am just having fun and feeling blissful again. Life is really good right now!
This is the End (2013)
The apocalyptic comedy, This is the End, is about six Hollywood actor friends trapped in a house after strange events devastate Los Angeles. All the actors actually play hilarious, rude versions of themselves such as Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride. The cameos also play funny versions of themselves such as Michael Cera, Emma Watson and Rihanna. See: movie trailer
Co-director Rogen has said that 50% of the film is ad-libbed and perhaps that’s what adds the zest to the raunchy and crude dialogue and situations. Part of the fun is wondering how much of what they are saying to each other (and the movies they starred in) are true. Either way this film was thoroughly entertaining and actually had some nice life lessons about friendship and what you would do for a friend in need.
What movies demonstrate the kind of friendships you have OR wished you had? Let me know and I’ll share your movie tips with other readers of this blog!

Tip#665: Your Greatness, Purpose & Focus – Man of Steel
I lovingly remember my Dad encouraging all my talents growing up and always let me know he loved me. And even though he passed over ten years ago I have felt his presence during difficult times cheering me on to persevere. I’ve even had magical signs from him in the form of shiny dimes! See: tip#638
Today is Father’s Day and it feels synchronistic that I recently saw After Earth (see tip#664) and Man of Steel because both are father and son stories. And in Man of Steel you get two father stories in one. I felt my dad’s spirit was with me while watching the new Superman movie. As the two fathers spoke powerful words of encouragement to their son I felt my own dad speaking to me through them.
Man of Steel (2013)
The superhero film, Man of Steel, is a reboot of the Superman story about a young man learning he is not from Earth and realizing his full potential and purpose. On his home planet of Krypton he is given the name Kal-El (Henry Cavill) by his father Jor-El (Russell Crowe). While on Earth he is given the name Clark Kent by his adoptive father Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) and mother Martha (Diane Lane). This is an epic, darker and visually stunning rendition depicting what would happen if a character like Superman were real in our world. See: movie trailer
The two fathers give Kal/Clark their guidance growing up on how to control and unleash his greatness. There is a beautiful scene where Clark’s mother Martha helps him focus his overwhelming powers as a young boy in school. Interestingly, there are two identical movie teaser trailers with a different narration by each father giving powerful advice that can inspire you as well.
See: Man of Steel - Official Teaser Trailer: Jonathan Kent
“You're not just anyone. One day, you're going to have to make a choice. You have to decide what kind of man you want to grow up to be. Whoever that man is, good character or bad, it's going to change the world.” Jonathan Kent
“I have to believe that you were sent here for a reason. And even if it takes the rest of your life, you owe it to yourself to find out what that reason is.” Jonathan Kent
See: Man of Steel - Official Teaser Trailer: Jor-El
“You will give the people an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.” Jor-El
I had many pros and cons about this revisioning of the Superman story and yet found it entertaining and filled with many motivational messages about finding your greatness, purpose and focus in life. Most of all it helped me reconnect with my own father and feel his loving words and guidance are still with me. Perhaps this film or others will help bring you closer to your own father.

Tip#664: Benefits of Box Office Bombs, Part 1 – After Earth
This is another challenging post to write because it’s about a movie that’s been critically savaged by many film reviewers and yet I feel compelled to share the value I received from this box office bomb. After Earth is a movie that I found entertaining and contained empowering insights for me.
I love sharing the positive experiences I’ve had about films that were considered box-office failures because it helps others discover these hidden gems. I have a vision that I will be really good friends with film studios like Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Columbia Pictures, Universal, 20th Century Fox, Dreamworks, Walt Disney and many others because they will recognize I help breathe new life into their film titles for more people to discover!
After Earth (2013)
The science fiction adventure drama, After Earth, is about a father and son who crash land on Earth after 1,000 years of abandoning its uninhabitable state. Teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) must travel through dangerous terrain in order to save himself and his father Cypher (Will Smith) who has broken both his legs. This film is filled with amazing futuristic scenery, spacecrafts and some really cool tech. See: movie trailer
The film also has many motivational messages for anyone experiencing fear and overwhelming adversity. Perhaps that’s why I resonated with this movie more then others because of my own challenges in life. I identified with its themes about perseverance, trust and faith in guidance, courage and finding inner strength. Here is one of the most powerful messages from the film…
"Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist… Do not misunderstand me; danger is very real. But fear is a choice."
Please note that there is so much I could write about this movie being directed by M. Night Shyamalan and the subdued performances and dialogue of the film. I just want to focus on the idea that if you’ve been through times of fear and facing impossible odds that you could find inspiration from this film. And if you are motivated to take action in your life then does it matter whether or not it came from a critically panned, box-office bomb?
Remember, the classic film It’s A Wonderful Life was considered a box-office failure!

Tip#663: Visualization & Your Imagination, Part 2 – Bedtime Stories
I am happy to say I am writing my first blog in my new home! It is the apartment that many told me would be impossible to find within a short time period and limited budget but I knew in my heart I would find it. And it was because of my creative visualization methods, a whole lot of faith AND the power of community that were the keys to success.
My primary affirmation that I spoke out loud several times a day was this: “As I look out my window of my quiet, bright bedroom and see beautiful green trees and blue skies I am so happy and grateful for my new home.” Now take a look at this photo taken from my new bedroom window and tell me if I was able to manifest my dream!
As I documented in May, it was another challenging time where I needed to continue to visualize what I desired despite what others believed was impossible. I kept my indestructible optimism active with the help of my wellness consultant and my life coach. On a weekly basis they consistently encouraged me to “stay the course” and with my latest success with a gloriously beautiful home overlooking the lake shore I hope my story encourages you to follow your dreams and goals no matter what!
Bedtime Stories (2008)
The comedy Bedtime Stories is about a hotel handyman named Skeeter (Adam Sandler) who tells bedtime stories to his niece and nephew that magically comes true. Somehow when they add their ideas to his stories they manifest into reality. For example when the kids say that Abraham Lincoln will appear he does so but on an American penny with Lincoln’s face on it!
Even though this is a light family film it speaks strongly on the key factor of creative visualization where it starts with childlike play of the imagination. Tapping into a realm where anything is possible is where great visionaries like Thomas Edison, The Wright Brothers and Albert Einstein first pictured what they wanted to manifest.
What have you visualized that came true? A home or car you wanted? A job or vacation you desired? These may seem trivial but remember if you first pictured whatever you wanted with your mind. And then share your story with me and I will share it with others because your story may inspire someone with your success story!

Tip#662: Celebrating Awesome Young Filmmakers - 2013 Multimedia Film Festival of York Region
As I wrote in tip#645, I was one of three adjudicators for the 2013 Multimedia Film Festival of York Region and watched over 60 short films. I was so inspired by the talent of such young, awesome filmmakers who told powerful stories in just a few minutes. I got to meet some of these amazing youths at the gala awards and posted my photos on Facebook: See photos
Here are some of my favourites that I voted for. Click on the title so you can see the short film online:

Tip#661: Are You Open to Change? – Warm Bodies
“Every great thing starts out a little scary, doesn’t it?”
Warm Bodies (2013)
As I mentioned in tip#652, May would be a big month of change and it was (see previous posts). A lot has happened and I have yet to write about a most enjoyable motivational presentation I gave at Toronto’s Metro Hall Employment Services for entrepreneurs and business owners. Plus I was one of the adjudicators (see tip#645) for the amazing award-winning films from the recent gala evening of the Multimedia Film Festival of York Region. See: Winners
Right now I am focused on the changes in my life where a new home and new work opportunities are just within reach. I am in that in between stage where I feel uprooted and a little uneasy. It’s not a pleasant feeling! Can you relate to that kind of change? In the end I do my best to remind myself that change always leads to something great. It always feels uncomfortable and stressful at first. See “The Cake Message” from tip#50 for an inspiring analogy.
Warm Bodies (2013)
The romantic zombie comedy, Warm Bodies, is about an unusual zombie named R (Nicholas Hoult) who develops a close relationship with a healthy human named Julie (Teresa Palmer) after he kills and eats her boyfriend’s brain absorbing his memories and feelings for Julie. Still with me?! This triggers a biological change in R’s heart and transforms Julie’s perceptions that zombies can live and feel again. See: movie trailer
This is one of those entertaining, original films that takes you beyond zombie movies and become thought provoking. The story can mirror your own life by questioning whether you are truly living or not. And if you are not then are you willing to change something about your self to achieve your goals? The film’s ultimate motivating message is that others will be there to support you in your time of change.
What favourite movies inspire you with the movie hero having to change? What film characters do you relate to that transform themselves into being a better person? Let me know and I’ll share your story. It might inspire someone to stay motivated!
