Tip#651: Cultivate Community, Part 2 - Defiance

I’ve started to look for a new home and it has already left me feeling uprooted and displaced. Amazingly, three of my closest friends are also in the process of moving to new homes. I find this very synchronistic as we have all been very supportive of each other for many years and feel we must be shifting into new phases of our lives.

One of these friends has hosted many weekly movie nights and dinners at his home which always filled me with much inspiration and fun over the years. And on the last of our movie nights at his (soon to be) previous home he highly recommended we watch Defiance. The film synchronistically spoke about uprooting homes and cultivating community.

Defiance (2008)

The World War II film, Defiance, is based on a true story of three Jewish brothers who saved Jews in Belarus within Eastern Europe. The Bielski brothers Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Live Schreiber) and Asael (Jamie Bell) all grew as strong leaders as they helped create a new community of escapees hiding in the forest. This gritty story has many powerful, emotional performances set in the contrast of beautiful forest scenery during the changing seasons.

The story also demonstrates the focus and building of community in order to survive. The escapees grew in numbers and they had to relocate and build new homes several times. Times were harsh and yet they learned to work together, share whatever food they had and put aside differences in order to continue living.

There may be times you feel uprooted and displaced in your life or career. This is where good friends, family and neighbors come in to support you in your time of need. And it is important to be there for them when they need help. A sense of community is a powerful support system that goes both ways. Cultivate a caring community mindset today!

Tip#650: The Power of Facebook – V for Vendetta

Have you experienced how fast an idea can spread on Facebook? It amazes me every single day I am logged on.  And the sharing of ideas, interests and comments has helped me both personally and professionally. I have discovered Facebook to be a really enjoyable social media tool and you can too if you expand your mindset to the hidden opportunities for your needs and interests.

Facebook can help you:
• Connect with successful people you admire
• Connect with like-minded people who support your personal interests
• Reconnect with friends, family and colleagues
• Build professional and business contacts
• Learn more about local and global news and events
• Get fast help and advice on a need or inquiry
• Share an idea or message and get instant comments and feedback

One ongoing benefit I have experienced is my friendship with Author, Speaker and Hollywood Film Writer and Director Paul Kyriazi. We have been corresponding regularly from my home in Toronto Canada to his home in Japan via Facebook messages and wall posts. Paul was key in getting me to publish my first book, "Movies for Motivation" on Amazon Kindle! And we have a shared passion for movies and James Bond.

Over the past few years, while healing from my bankruptcy and life changes (see tip#400), Paul kept me inspired with wisdom and tips from his eBook “How to Live the James Bond Lifestyle”. He has helped me find my inner Bond tapping into my unlimited confidence, tenacity and drive to rebuild my life and business. So through Facebook I have built a meaningful relationship with a great person on the other side of the world! And this relationship is one of many!

V for Vendetta (2005)

The action thriller, V for Vendetta, is about a charismatic freedom fighter known as V (Hugo Weaving) in a futuristic Great Britain now a fascist state. A working-class girl named Evey (Natalie Portman) gets caught up in V’s mission and witnesses the power of one man’s radical idea taking seed in the public’s minds and imagination. The film is visually stunning and stylish with a multitude of ideas to inspire perseverance, achieving goals, personal growth and the support of new ideas and change.

Though V uses violent tactics to get his message across to the masses there are lessons here that relate to the power of Facebook and other social media sites. V demonstrates that you will find supporters when you communicate your idea through a broadcasting method that reaches hundreds, thousands and even millions of people.

Social media is about being social and having conversations. Take time to learn more success stories about Facebook to inspire you to recognize its value for your personal or professional needs. Facebook can be fun when you discover its power. Start playing with it today!

Tip#649: The Power of Linkedin – Good Will Hunting

Have you discovered the networking power of Linkedin? I am continually amazed at how fast I can connect with professionals around the world through this highly effective social media business/work tool. And some of the connections I’ve made were mutually beneficial for business AND with a feeling of supportive friendships.

Success Story #1
My wellness consultant Robin Noble of Noble Destinations Inc. in Toronto Canada first connected with me on Linkedin because she just liked my profile. I have since written her business bio and provided her with social media content development. In turn Robin has been providing me with breakthrough advice on healing from my severe life-changes over the years. See: Robin’s Linkedin profile

Success Story #2
When I needed to have my book Movies for Motivation converted to various eBook formats I joined an eBook related group on Linkedin and posted my call for help. Victoriakumar (Vic) Yallamelli of RMG Corp. in India came to my rescue and guided into this new digital world! He provided a great service and made me feel like we were already close friends. See: Vic’s Linkedin profile

Success Story #3
Recently, I posted on my Linkedin “update” inquiring what people thought of my term “Sizzle Factor Assessment”. I quickly received a message from Mark Turner of Motivational Maps in the United Kingdom interested in learning more. I, in turn, discovered more about my emotions and feelings and why I behave or react the way I do through Mark’s amazing personal assessment tool called Motivational Maps! See: Mark’s Linkedin profile

Good Will Hunting (1997)

The drama Good Will Hunting is about a rebellious 20 year old from South Boston named Will Hunting (Matt Damon) who has a genius-level intellect. He later becomes a patient of therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams). Together they develop a unique patient/therapist relationship where they each end up helping one another break through inner blocks and issues. See: movie trailer

This academy award winning film inspires on many levels as well as it’s real-life story of actors and screenwriters Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. They have been long-term friends AND successful professionals working together in the film business for many years. It reminds me of similar success stories I’ve had through Linkedin and what you can experience as well when you learn to use it as a powerful connecting and networking tool.

The true power of Linkedin is the combination of finding professionals anywhere on this planet that can be both professionally and personally supportive. Take time to learn how to use Linkedin and communicate your needs via your “updates”, profile information and groups you can join. Have meaningful conversations with people around the world! Remember Linkedin is social media and it is about being SOCIAL!

Tip#648: The Power of Blogging – Julie & Julia

Do you want to be inspired about the power of blogs? I recently received a call from my friend and wellness speaker Lynn Manwar that made my day! She called to thank me for advising her to watch Julie & Julia two years ago to inspire the creation of her own blog. She said she just received three requests from other companies to write blogs for them (with compensation) based on what they loved about her blog featuring wellness tips and inspiring stories as a cancer survivor. Lynn said to me “You got me started and this is where it’s leading. And it’s very exciting!” See her blog: Lynn Manwar

Blogs are empowering on many levels both personally and professionally:

• Blogging allows you to communicate unique, personal stories and demonstrate your expertise, skills, talents and knowledge.
• Blogs help build a business presence online that can attract exciting opportunities.
• Blogs quickly build a global audience, fan base and potential clients.
• You can build writing skills and interpersonal skills as well as increase your self-confidence and self-worth.
• Most importantly what you write or post in a blog can help make a positive difference in someone’s life somewhere on this planet.

Julie & Julia (2009)

The comedy drama Julie & Julia is about two true stories on the lives of chef Julia Child (Meryl Streep) and New York blogger Julie Powell (Amy Adams). Powell’s story begins as being unhappy with her unpleasant job and then focuses on her passion for cooking and starts to write a daily blog. She made it a goal to cook every recipe in Julia Child’s book Mastering the Art of French Cooking for one year and write about the results. See: movie trailer

Powell's blog soon builds a large following online that led to media interviews including the prestigious New York Times. She didn’t do any promotion as the internet provided the built-in method for others with similar interests to find her cooking related blog online. This, of course, led to Powell’s inspiring story being published and then made into an Academy Awards winning movie!

If you have a personal interest you want to share with the world or a product or service you want to promote then look at blogs as a powerful online tool. Your voice and message will be heard through the magic of the internet and social media! Blogging can allow your greatness to shine online and that will attract like-minded people and unexpected opportunities. Blogging may become your new passion!

Tip#647: Have You Experienced a Sudden Shift in Your Life? - The Shift

Movies and documentaries can provide big insights and inspiration for you. And there is one docudrama called The Shift that can answer questions especially if you have experienced an unexpected change in your life and career forcing you to rethink everything you thought was true. See: The Shift website

The film stars Dr. Wayne Dyer who introduces the concept of a “shift” that some people experience turning their life upside. To better explain the concept he presents a study called “The Moment That Turns Your Values Upside Down” (W. R. Miller & J. C’DeBaca, Anatomy of a Quantum Change. Spirituality & Health) showing the ranking of the most important values for men and women before and after they experienced a shift or quantum moment in their lives. The study group was followed over a lifetime.

Men Before Shift:
1. Wealth/Accumulating money
2. Sense of adventure
3. Achievement
4. Pleasure
5. To be respected

Men After Shift:
1. Spirituality
2. Personal peace/less stress
3. Family
4. God’s will/Sense of purpose
5. Honesty

Women Before Shift:
1. Family
2. Sense of independence
3. Career
4. Fitting in
5. Attractiveness

Women After Shift:
1. Personal growth
2. Self esteem
3. Spirituality
4. Happiness
5. Forgiveness

The Shift (2009)

The docudrama The Shift is about several individuals that experience a shift in their lives and how they deal with the sudden change. Some of the stars include Portia de Rossi, Ed Kerr and Michael DeLuise filmed in the beautiful location of California’s Monterey Peninsula. The storyline that ties everything together is a film crew’s interview with author and self-help guru Dr. Wayne Dyer explaining the concept of the “shift” that actually helps us find our true purpose in life. See: movie trailer

This film is a very personal favourite of mine because it explains the roller-coaster life path that I am experiencing. And the study above of men’s values after the shift is very accurate to how I feel. Everything I thought to be true before my shift has changed and I’ve been learning to adapt and enjoy this reset in values. If this article has resonated with you then I highly recommend watching The Shift movie.

Times of sudden change in life and career can be painful and yet it can be the catalyst to take you to a higher understanding of your purpose and of finding an inner peace. Be inspired by movies and documentaries that can fill you with hope and AHA moments to move you forward with enthusiasm!

Tip#646: The Lasting Importance of a Film - Roger Ebert - Citizen Kane

On April 4, 2013 film lovers around the world lost the great and acclaimed film critic Roger Ebert. He was such a lasting fixture in the world of movies and I feel sad he is gone. Not only was he a part of my life growing up Ebert was an incredible inspiration for continuing to write reviews after having lost his voice due to his long battle with cancer.

Ebert leaves us with a wealth of movie reviews. He also left us with one final top 10 favourite films list. I was happy to see one of my favourites, Citizen Kane, because I believe everyone must see this classic and powerful story. Below is Ebert’s list that he put in alphabetical order. Read more on Rogerebert.com

• Aguirre, Wrath of God (Werner Herzog)
• Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola)
• Citizen Kane (Orson Welles)
• La Dolce Vita (Federico Fellini)
• The General (Buster Keaton)
• Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese)
• 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick)
• Tokyo Story (Yasujiro Ozu)
• The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick)
• Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock)

Citizen Kane (1941)

The drama Citizen Kane is about the life of millionaire newspaper tycoon Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles) and how, after his death, puzzle pieces of his life are assembled by reporters searching for the meaning of his final words “rosebud”. What unravels is epic and innovative cinematic storytelling of life lessons we can all learn from.

Ebert indicated that his favourite film is Citizen Kane though he preferred to emphasize it as "the most important" film. For me the story is important because it reveals a key answer to the question of why people feel terminally stuck in their lives. And that answer lies in something emotional we experienced in our childhood. The film demonstrates, for better or for worse, that this childhood event will effect the rest of one's life.

Films with important messages can have lasting power. Be inspired to watch a movie recommended by someone you respect or trust. And then allow yourself to be entertained AND re-energized with answers the film’s story and movie hero will bring you!

Tip#645: Fill Your Life with Wonder - Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium

I am very happy to announce that I am one of the adjudicators for the 2013 Multimedia Film Festival of York Region! It’s my job to watch, review and mark 65 short films under the topics of drama, animation and documentary. What is wonderful is that the entries come from a diverse age group ranging from age 6 in elementary schools through to secondary schools to professionals. See: Film Festival details

So far I’ve reviewed almost half of the entries and have witnessed so much imagination and intriguing ideas coming from kids and youths. It feels like I’m in a candy shop or toy store filled with films bursting with creativity and heart! Not all are technically polished but every one of them has an important story someone wanted to tell.

Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007)

The fantasy comedy drama, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, is about a magical, living toy store owned by the whimsical and kooky Mr. Edward Magorium (Dustin Hoffman). Molly Mahoney (Natalie Portman) is his employee who is also friends with Eric Applebaum (Zach Mills) a boy who regularly comes to the toy store. Together they thrill in the fantastic wonders of what the toy store offers and later they must face unexpected changes for the emporium. See: movie trailer

There is so much to look at in every colourful scene especially in the toy store. And it was fun to recognize areas that were filmed in my hometown of Toronto! There are also many life lessons in this movie to inspire you. Surprisingly this film has a beautiful message to help young ones deal with the loss of a loved one. Mr. Magorium becomes a wonderful teacher of how to live life to the fullest and also how to embrace and accept the end of an adventure.

Inspiring Themes:
• Finding your passion, gifts & “sparkle”
• Overcoming shyness
• Find a live/work balance
• Dealing with the end of something you love
• Dealing with the loss of a loved one

Motivating quotes from the film…

“Your life is an occasion, rise to it.”

“We breathe. We pulse. We regenerate. Our hearts beat. Our minds create. Our souls ingest. 37 seconds, well used, is a lifetime.”

“All stories, even the ones we love, must eventually come to an end. And when they do it’s only an opportunity for another story to begin!”

There is wonder all around us that can uplift our spirits and tickle our hearts and minds. Sometimes these wonders leave us and we can feel a deep loss. Take time today to look at life through the eyes of a child and feel how good it feels! Make sure the story of your life is filled with wonder and a sense of magic!

Tip#644: Take Inventory of Your Achievements – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

One of the joys I have conducting my Sizzle Factor Assessment with clients is witnessing them light up when remembering long forgotten achievements. This assessment I created helps individuals re-connect with their greatness and helps them move forward with career and business goals with confidence! Taking inventory of your achievements can re-energize your drive because it reminds you of your overflowing value.

I am writing a new business bio for my friend and business coach Patrick Bizindavyi and we did a Sizzle Factor Assessment. He was amazed to remember many achievements he had accomplished while in his home in Burundi like being a top radio show broadcaster and winning 15 trophies as a basketball coach for youths. I saw Patrick light up and he was recognizing the scope of his own greatness and value to others.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

The epic fantasy adventure film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first of a three-part series taking place prior to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and follows the adventures of a younger Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman). In this chapter Bilbo is convinced by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to join 13 dwarves to reclaim their home conquered by Smaug the dragon. Though this is a long film it is filled with fantastic scenery, stunning visual effects and colourful characters in every frame. See: movie trailer

At first the dwarves question Bilbo’s abilities and skills especially their leader Thorin (Richard Armitage). But with each adversity they all face Bilbo proves his worth and talents in some way helping them to move forward. Eventually Bilbo’s achievements add up giving himself more confidence AND heartfelt acknowledgement and gratitude from Thorin and the group.

Whenever you feel stuck in your life or career it may be time to take inventory of your achievements. Remembering your accomplishments over the years of your life and work can help boost your self-esteem and confidence. You will be reminded that if you can do something great in the past you can do it again today!
