Tip#668: Cultivate Community, Part 5 – Be Kind Rewind

I am really enjoying my new home on the Toronto lakeshore! After an intense time searching for this space (see tip#655) I’ve been able to relax and enjoy the tranquility of a peaceful bedroom and living space. Also I’ve been enjoying rollerblading along the lakeshore paths and the many facilities here like swimming in the heavenly pool! I’m also meeting new people everyday living in this condo community. See: video of my glorious balcony view

There are many people to thank because I wouldn’t be here if not for the help of the many communities I reached out to. Community and word-of-mouth were the keys to my success. Here are the groups that helped me…

1. Mastery of Self-Expression Community
This was the personal development workshop that I’ve blogged about (see tip#538) that helped me after my bankruptcy hit. After hearing about my needs several members immediately offered their homes in case I didn’t find one by my deadline. Just receiving the offers filled me with hope.

2. Swapsity.ca Community
This is a barter website where it’s founder encouraged me to share my need on their community blog and it immediately generated apartment leads and encouraging messages from its members. I was also able to pass on the leads to others seeking apartments. (See tip#656)

3. Gift Circle Community
This new meetup.com group is just magical and powerful and is all about sharing a need and quickly finding someone who will provide it as a gift. When I shared my need for a new apartment I received an offer for temporary space in someone’s home and got a shared apartment lead.

4. Facebook Community
When Swapsity.ca posted my blog article for a new apartment several people on Facebook reposted it on their walls for their own group of friends to see. I also received direct Facebook messages of heartfelt thanks for inspiring them with my story of staying positive in the face of adversities.

5. Friends, Family, Colleagues Community
In the end I found my new home through a friend who owned a condo and had an extra room. She had been following my apartment search and called to offer the space. Deep down I feel that this gift of a home came because I followed my intuition to reach out to new communities. I learned so much about how helpful strangers can be and now I can share this to inspire others like you!

Be Kind Rewind (2008)

The comedy, Be Kind Rewind, is about how videos in a VHS rental store all get erased and it is up to employee Mike (Mos Def) and friend Jerry (Jack Black) to re-film the movies. The films they redo include Ghostbusters, Robocop, Driving Miss Daisy and many more. They then attract a massive following because of the crude, imaginative style of film-making they called “sweded”. See: movie trailer

Soon the neighborhood residents all get involved in the filmmaking process elevating the sense of community. They then rally together to create an original movie to raise money to save the building the rental store is in that is scheduled to be demolished. The film is a heartwarming story of how people come together through a common passion and help each other achieve a common goal.

What movies demonstrate a strong sense of community for you? Let me know and I will share your movie recommendations that could inspire others!

"Deep down I feel that this home gift from the universe came because I followed my intuition to reach out to new communities"- so you needed a room to stay, and you asked around. Hardly a 'gift from the universe'.

I was hungry, and I ate a sandwich. Deep down I feel this sandwich was a gift from the universe.

This isn't inspirational, this is stupid.

Re: gift from the universe

Hey Anonymous, thanks for sharing your opinion about that statement. You actually helped me see that I was trying to add an important spiritual factor (not religious) to finding my home with the "gift from the universe" reference. Now I see it would take a whole other blog post to explain so for simplicity I just made an edit to the statement on the post.
